Arizona Couple In Their 90s Found Dead In Alleged Murder-Suicide

A husband and wife in Arizona, both in their 90s, were recently found dead at an elderly care facility. Authorities believe this was the result of an apparent murder-suicide. A police spokesperson also shared a statement over the case amid the investigation.

The Wife Still Had A Pulse When Authorities Arrived At The Scene & Was Rushed To A Local Hospital

In the early hours of October 16, police responded to a report at an elderly group home and care facility in Mesa, Arizona. Two elderly residents appeared to be shot and weren’t breathing. The incident reportedly took place early in the morning, at just after 4 AM local time.

When police arrived, they discovered the couple in their bedroom. Both appeared to have gunshot wounds to the head.

The couple was identified as 92-year-old Jerome Woolums and his wife, 93-year-old Katharine Woolum. According to People, staff at the facility, who were not named, had claimed Jerome possibly shot himself.

The outlet also claimed that Jerome was found “with a possible self-inflicted gunshot wound.” KPHO noted that police claimed Jerome was still holding a gun when they arrived at the scene.

Authorities Have Shared That The Investigation Is Still Ongoing & That They Are Still Looking For A Motive

While Jerome was believed to have died at the scene, Katharine still had a pulse. She was then rushed to a local hospital, with firefighters at the scene also trying to perform life-saving efforts on her. However, she later succumbed to her injuries and died at the hospital.

According to detectives, Jerome and Katharine were married for years and had been living at the facility to receive medical care. Authorities believe that Jerome shot Katharine before turning the gun on himself.

In a release, however, police have said that the investigation is still ongoing. It has also been shared that the couple’s family was also notified about what had happened.

In a statement with The Arizona Republic, Detective John Dreyer shared, “We are looking at this as a murder-suicide. At this stage of the investigation, evidence indicates Jerome shot his wife, Katharine, before taking his own life.” Reportedly, authorities are also awaiting medical examinations and are still looking for a motivation behind the shootings.

In their coverage of the story, Arizona’s Family claimed that the elderly care home where the couple was found shot was owned by Ibransie Loving Care Home in Arizona. When contacted, the group’s home office, which is based in Mesa, shared that they were aware of what the situation, but did not want to comment further on the story.
