Noah Kahan defends Chappell Roan against “scummy” professional autograph “scalpers” and Boy George tells her to “own your fame” over Paris incident

Noah Kahan and Boy George have reacted after Chappell Roan confronted a group of people in Paris who she said were following her around in public.

The singer was seen surrounded by a hoard of people in the French capital recently as she attended Paris Fashion Week, and in one instance, she pulled out her phone and began filming to show what it was like for her on a regular basis.

In a video taken by an onlooker that began making the rounds online earlier this week, Roan filmed herself in selfie mode as she was trying to go to a restaurant, and showed how she was circled by fans and photographers as soon as she left her car.

“I’m just trying to go to dinner, and I’ve asked these people several times to get away from me,” she said on the video, before turning the camera to film some of the people who were still stood around her.

Roan went on to add: “[I feel] disregarded as a human… These are all the people that are completely disregarding my boundaries,” before she addressed them again and asked for some space.

Following the incident, Noah Kahan came to Roan’s defence, sharing a headline from Billboard about what happened and writing on his Instagram Stories: “Maybe they should just leave her alone? Also those dudes saying, ‘I’m a huge fan,’ following her around are scalpers and are as bad as the paparazzi. Fuck ’em all.”

He then shared a second post, expanding his thoughts on camera, explaining that often, people asking for photos aren’t genuine followers.

“These people literally find out where you’re staying, where you’re flying into, where your team, family, whoever is staying, and they are clearly not your fans,” he said.

“They just sit outside places and try to guilt you into signing shit so they can sell it, and they trick people like you who are just watching the video and don’t know what’s going on into thinking that someone is being rude to their fans when really they’re just manipulating you.”

Kahan added: “They’re scummy, they’re manipulative, they’re parasitic, and, yeah, fuck ‘em.”

Boy George also gave his thoughts on the matter, writing on X: “It’s probably not helpful but I have been doing this fame thing for a while and you learn slowly and painfully that you don’t get a free pass once you turn yourself into a bird of paradise.

“I watched @ChappellRoan filming the paps in Paris and I laughed because I have kicked off at them many times. The trick is to own your fame. Yes, it’s annoying at times but so is being ignored and told your a ‘has-been.”

He continued: “Life is always now and I think Chappell looks great but cheer up girl. The world is at your feet stop kicking it! It takes so much more time to say no to a picture or a signature. Boundaries are boring. Break them with the magic of kindness!”

This isn’t the only time that the former NME Cover star has called out intrusive behaviour from fans and paparazzi. Back in 2024 she divided opinions when she compared fame to “an abusive ex-husband” and vented about the normalisation of extreme fan behaviour including “stalking, talking shit online, [people who] won’t leave you alone, yelling at you in public.”

Prior to that, she had taken to TikTok to share her thoughts on “weird” and “creepy” followers, calling out the “predatory behaviour” of so-called “superfans” that includes “nonconsensual physical and social interactions”, and also hit back at photographers who yelled at her on the VMAs red carpet.

Her statements have since been applauded by celebrities like Miley Cyrus, Stevie Nicks, Rachel Zegler, and Daniel Craig, the latter saying he admires “the guts to say those things”. Olivia Rodrigo also revealed that Roan has been a key support figure in helping her deal with an “overwhelming” entertainment industry.
