‘Jeopardy!’ Host Responds to Online Critics

As Jeopardy! viewers can attest, Ken Jennings’ wit almost faster than his buzzer finger. And as his social media followers can attest, he doesn’t just save his zingers for the game show.

The quiz show host responded to transphobia accusations with an au contraire statement recently, but not before firing off a sarcastic reply. Scroll down to read about that moment and his other clapbacks toward internet critics.

    A soapbox moment about lecterns

One Jeopardy! fan got nitty-gritty on Twitter in December 2022, claiming Jennings should be saying contestants stand behind a “lectern” and not a “podium” because podiums are raised platforms.

“What if, and I suggest this as gently as I can, the dictionary disagrees,” said Jennings, sharing a screenshot of Merriam-Webster saying podium and lectern are synonymous.

    Grammarians on notice

In August 2022, Jennings announced on Twitter that Jeopardy! was launching a weekly behind-the-scenes podcast. “This week’s guests are me and Mayim [Bialik]! he added.

Another user took issue with that phrasing, writing, “The need for alliteration trumped grammar?”

To that, Jennings wrote, “Y’all out there acting like you routinely say stuff like ‘This week’s guest is I!’ You are lying or weirdos or both.”

    Jumping on the wagon

“Listen, Ken Jennings. Just read the answers. Stop with the commentary,” one viewer wrote in an unpunctuated tweet in January 2023, adding the hashtags #jeopardy and #a**wagon.

“Looking into this now,” Jennings replied, presumably after turning his sincerity dial to zero.

Another user quipped, “I didn’t realize you also host A**wagon!” And to that, the host joked, “It really hosts itself.”

    A Wilde dispute

One Twitter user took issue in February 2023 when Jennings interjected on air that a Jeopardy! clue was about contestant Matthew Marcus’ favorite writer, after hearing that Marcus went to Magdalen College because of Oscar Wilde.

Jennings, however, disagreed with that critique. “The last word in the clue was ‘Wilde,’” he replied. “Nobody added a hint.”

    A Buzzy response

Jennings got a little ribald on Twitter later that month after one Jeopardy! viewer said his wife thought Jennings talked too fast and wanted Buzzy Cohen to host instead. “Slow it down a notch,” that viewer urged in their now-deleted tweet, according to The U.S. Sun.

“Never,” Jennings wrote back. “But maybe Buzzy can come over to your house and attend to your wife?”

    Appalachian tale

A Twitter critic complained about Jennings’ pronunciation of the word “Appalachian” in March 2023, arguing in a now-deleted tweet that the way to “#SayItRight” was “Appa-LATCH-un,” per the Toronto Sun.

Jennings fired back with a link to Merriam-Webster listing both pronunciations as acceptable. “You guys lost the war [and] now the North writes the dictionaries,” he wrote.

    For sake’s sake

In April 2023, an X user tagged Jennings in a post telling Jeopardy! writers that “sake” and “jockey” do not rhyme. Jennings responded with screenshots of Merriam-Webster listing the pronunciation of the former as ˈsä-kē and that of the latter as ˈjä-kē. “I am once again asking Americans to buy a dictionary,” he added.

The original X user replied, saying, “Love when English changes foreign words, I guess.” Jennings responded to that, too, writing, “Yeah, I’m always made when people say the ‘s’ in Paris. Shameful.”

    Striking out a criticism

A now-deleted X post from August 2023 had one viewer claiming that late Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek would “never” host the game show during a Writers Guild of America strike.

Jennings corrected that narrative in an X reply, sharing a screenshot of a statement from a Jeopardy! spokesperson, which read, “We have always been careful to honor our WGA agreements, and we would never air game material not created by WGA writers. However, just as we did, led by Alex Trebek, during the 2007-2008 strike, we will deliver first-run episodes again this fall to more than 200 affiliate stations nationwide.”

    Spelling out trans rights

Jennings got sardonic in August 2026 after one Bluesky user criticized his screenshot of his Spelling Bee gameplay. That user contended that playing New York Times games is “an insult to trans people.” (GLAAD has accused the Times of “biased, inaccurate” coverage of transgender people.)

“This may be true of others, but I actually got express permission from the trans community to keep NYT games and recipes,” Jennings wrote in response. “I also have a news subscription, which is arguably worse, so I had to specifically send in a written request. Took 30 days, but I got approved. They were like, ‘Trans people are not a monolith,’ and, ‘Like-minded allies may disagree on specific media boycotts,’ and stuff like that. It was a huge load off my mind!”

But then the host noticed right-wing outlets covering that clapback and implying he was “aligned with their own transphobia,” as he told followers.

In an in-depth response, Jennings wrote, “For the record: NOPE. Honestly, I don’t think there’s an issue today I care about on a personal level more deeply than trans rights. And it’s rough out there right now. Bigots on one side of the political aisle and too many cowards on the other.”

He continued: “Anyone who knows me even a little, or has even followed me long on social media, already knows this about me. Our institutions are literally trying to erase trans people right now, and it pisses me off. A snarky reply to one bad take on Bluesky doesn’t mean that’s changed at all. … My TV job is apolitical, but I’m proud that one of the things we make is a space that’s trans- and [nonbinary]-friendly, and that’s not going to change either. … I stand with my trans friends and family members.”
