Obi-Wan Officially Knows Tatooine Better than Tusken Raiders

Obi-Wan Officially Knows Tatooine Better than Tusken Raiders

In Marvel’s new Obi-Wan comic, the nomad Jedi Master proves that he’s able to prepare for Tatooine’s inclement weather far better than the Sand People

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Obi-Wan #1

In Marvel and Star Wars‘ new Obi-Wan series, the titular Jedi Master proves he knows Tatooine better than Tusken Raiders. Taking place in the years before A New Hope, Obi-Wan is waiting out a brutal sandstorm that’s overtaken the region, writing in his journals and reflecting on his life. However, the beginning of the issue shows that Obi-Wan knew well in advance that the storm was coming, picking up on signs the indigenous Sand People could only dream of.

Choosing to protect young Luke Skywalker following the events of Revenge of the Sith, Obi-Wan took the name Ben and became a hermit on Tatooine for 19 years. During that time, Obi-Wan became acclimated to life on the desert world, living in the Jundland Wastes and watching over young Skywalker from a distance due to the disapproval of Luke’s Uncle Owen. Now, the new Obi-Wan #1 from Christopher Cantwell and Ario Anindito proves just how good of a Tatooine survivalist Kenobi truly was.

In the new issue, Obi-Wan reveals that while the region may look clear in the present, he can feel the massive sandstorm that’s fast approaching all the same. Not only has he learned to see, hear, and feel the signs such as the eerie quiet and slight changes in the wind, but Kenobi can also feel the storm coming through the Force like a dark shadow that intends to claim the region. As such, it seems as though being a Jedi with Force abilities provides an impressive advantage over the nomadic Tusken Raiders.

It should be noted that Tusken Raiders are born and often die in the deserts of Tatooine without ever leaving. As a result, the tribes of the Sand People have perfected how to survive and prepare for sandstorms seeing as how its a regular occurrence. That being said, the lead time Obi-Wan has to prepare via the Force gives him a unique leg-up that the Tusken Raiders of Tatooine simply don’t. The fact that the Jedi can feel the storm while inside his hut like a “surge of darkness“ also proves that the Force is still his ally during his isolation.

The bulk of this new series will be looking back at previously unrevealed moments from Obi-Wan’s history as the Jedi waits out the brutal sandstorm by writing in his journals. However, it would still be exciting to see more of Kenobi’s time on Tatooine in future issues. Either way, Star Wars fans will just have to wait and see as Marvel’s Obi-Wan continues.
