Guide Through México’s Wine Country, the World’s Best Kept Secret

Exploring Wine Regions – México by Michael Higgins

A must-read for wine lovers, food enthusiasts, and travelers alike.

What if the world’s most exciting wine destination wasn’t where you thought it was? Hidden just south of the border, México’s wine country is rewriting the rules of winemaking.

Michael C. Higgins, PhD, invites readers to embark on an exciting journey through the heart of México’s wine regions in Exploring Wine Regions — México: México’s Quality Wines and Phenomenal Cuisine.

With over 600 stunning photographs and meticulous research, this guide shines a spotlight on the country’s burgeoning wine culture and deep connection to Méxican gastronomy. The book celebrates craft, community, and culture, blending historical insight with a modern appreciation for the art of winemaking and culinary innovation.

A Taste of Tradition and Innovation

The author introduces readers to three extraordinary wine regions that define México’s winemaking renaissance — Valle de Guadalupe, Guanajuato, and Querétaro — and each region tells a unique story of terroir, tradition, and transformation.

Valle de Guadalupe, often called the Napa Valley of México, is a haven for both winemaking veterans and ambitious newcomers. Michael C. Higgins captures the region’s vibrancy, detailing its sun-soaked vineyards, creative tasting experiences, and the artisanal spirit that permeates its wineries. From earthy reds to crisp whites, this region’s wines reflect its rugged yet bountiful landscape. Of course, complementing the wine are gourmet restaurants that push the boundaries of culinary creativity, offering pairings that highlight the synergy between food and wine.

Guanajuato, a region rich in history and charm, offers a more intimate wine experience. With over forty wineries, it’s a treasure trove of unique varietals like Nebbiolo and Tempranillo. The author brings to life the quaint allure of San Miguel de Allende, whose cobblestone streets and historic architecture add a layer of cultural depth to the wine tourism experience. The wines here are shaped by the region’s diverse microclimates, and Michael C. Higgins’ descriptions evoke the rich, nuanced flavors that set Guanajuato apart, which will make the reader yearn to be there.

Meanwhile, Querétaro is the sparkling jewel of Méxican winemaking. Renowned for its exceptional sparkling wines, this region’s ties to Champagne and Cava traditions lend an air of sophistication to its offerings. Here, readers have the opportunity to explore Querétaro’s rolling vineyards and lively tasting rooms and learn all about the effervescent wines that rival their European counterparts. The region’s culinary landscape is equally impressive, showcasing innovative dishes that complement its sparkling wines.

    Gastronomy That Complements the Vine

What truly sets Exploring Wine Regions — México: México’s Quality Wines and Phenomenal Cuisine apart is its holistic celebration of wine and food. Michael C. Higgins doesn’t merely describe the wines; he weaves them into the broader narrative of Méxican gastronomy. The book highlights 56 phenomenal restaurants, each selected for its dedication to pairing local wines with exquisite cuisine. Through vivid anecdotes and detailed descriptions, Higgins transports readers to meals that linger in the memory — a decadent mole paired with a robust red, or a zesty ceviche served alongside a crisp white.

The culinary adventures extend beyond the plate and glass, though. The author delves into the stories of the chefs and vintners who bring these creations to life. Their passion and innovation are palpable, painting a picture of a country whose culinary identity is as diverse as its landscapes. The book’s photography adds an extra layer of immersion, capturing not only the dishes but also the vibrant markets, bustling kitchens, and lush vineyards that form the backdrop of México’s culinary scene.

A Guide for the Intrepid Explorer

For those inspired to experience México’s wine regions firsthand, Michael C. Higgins provides practical tools to make the journey seamless and unforgettable. Detailed maps, contact information for wineries and restaurants, and tips for navigating the regions are thoughtfully included. Whether you’re planning a day trip or an extended tour, these resources are invaluable.

Michael C. Higgins’ personal anecdotes add a touch of intimacy to the guide, too. He shares his amazement at discovering the quality of wines south of the California border, recounts the over 512 bottles he tasted during his research, and describes meals that left lasting impressions. His passion for the subject is infectious, making the reader feel like a trusted companion on his journey of discovery.

Moreover, the book emphasizes responsible and safe travel. Readers are encouraged to make use of GPS technology for navigation, and the author includes recommendations for lodging to ensure a comfortable and immersive experience.

    Final Thoughts

Exploring Wine Regions — México: México’s Quality Wines and Phenomenal Cuisine is far more than a guidebook; it showcases the beauty and complexity of México’s wine and culinary landscape. Michael C. Higgins bridges the worlds of travel, gastronomy and wine, creating a work that is as informative as it is enchanting. His storytelling, coupled with breathtaking photography, invites readers to not only learn about Méxican wine but to experience it — to savor its flavors, explore its regions, and connect with its culture.

Prepare to be inspired, educated, and transported to a world where wine, food and culture come together in perfect harmony. This book is a must-read for wine lovers, food enthusiasts, and travelers alike.

For more than 20 years, author, photographer and wine expert, Michael C. Higgins has been the publisher of Flying Adventures magazine, a lifestyle travel publication for food and wine lovers who own and travel on private airplanes. As a private pilot, travel enthusiast, and food and wine lover himself, Higgins continues to live the story he’s been sharing for decades.

Between the magazine and his Exploring Wine Regions book series, Higgins has participated in some of the most extraordinary experiences. He has virtually done it all: from pruning vines, picking grapes and working alongside winemakers, to participating in blind tastings, food and wine pairings, judging Cru Bourgeois wines, and sharing many meals with world-renowned winemakers over countless hours, discussing everything wine. His time in the wine regions adds up to thousands of days and counting. And as an accomplished photographer, he has captured even more spectacular images of the wine world.

Higgins has participated in many unique wine experiences, indulged in the most exclusive culinary affairs, been pampered in highly luxurious destinations and jumped into the wildest of adventures. His goal is to inspire his readers to join him in exploring the wine regions of the world and experiencing the unimaginable. Higgins has a BA in Commercial Art, and an MBA and a PhD in Business Administration. He is a California native and lives in Pasadena, California.
