2026 Is Officially the Year Streaming Stops Being Worth It: Here’s Why

2026 Is Officially the Year Streaming Stops Being Worth It: Here’s Why

Anime has grown into a powerful force in the entertainment industry in recent years, drawing in millions of viewers from every corner of the world. With its rise in popularity, streaming platforms are now offering countless titles and trying to move in on the industry by gaining exclusive access to titles.

However, longtime anime fans are already feeling the effects of the shifting landscape surrounding anime and how it’s consumed. With many varying factors, fans are now considering different options aside from streaming as prices increase and the availability of titles becomes more exclusive.

Anime Has Grown Increasingly Popular in Recent Years

Anime’s rise over the past decade has been difficult to ignore. While it may once have been considered a niche interest, anime is now a growing force in mainstream media, capturing Hollywood’s attention.

This shift became especially apparent in 2025, a year that was marked by record-breaking success for the anime industry as films dominated the global box office. Demon Slayer in particular stands out with the film Infinity Castle Part 1: Akaza’s Return becoming one of the highest-grossing films of all of 2025, shattering records both domestically and internationally.

Other titles further prove this shift, including Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc, which exceeded both early expectations and updated expectations (updated after the unprecedented success of Infinity Castle) by millions. Meanwhile, Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution delivered strong numbers despite being a compilation film that recapped the Shibuya Incident arc and offered an early look at Season 3.

Anime’s success in 2025 was nothing short of historic for the industry, and its popularity only continues to grow. With anime no longer encompassing a niche community, it has officially established itself as an entertainment powerhouse. However, this hasn’t been without its drawbacks, which many longtime anime fans are beginning to take note of.

Watching Anime Is Steadily Becoming Harder To Do

As anime’s audience continues to expand, streaming giants are attempting to capitalize on its growth. While streaming platforms were initially celebrated as solutions for watching favorite series and films, they now present new challenges that are often frustrating for viewers.

Subscription prices across major platforms have continued to climb, despite those same companies reporting higher profits than ever and often without introducing any meaningful changes to content libraries or features. At the same time, many of these platforms now restrict account sharing, which makes streaming difficult during vacations or temporary living situations.

With multiple platforms competing to house hit titles, it becomes difficult for viewers to enjoy certain anime due to exclusivity. However, more frustrating is the fact that some series are experiencing fragmentation, forcing viewers to subscribe to multiple platforms if they want to watch a specific anime in full.

This is most notable with the hit series Oshi no Ko, which has seasons one and two available on Hulu, but Season 3 streaming exclusively on Crunchyroll and HIDIVE. The former platform only has Season 3 of the series, making it impossible for fans to enjoy the next season unless they have another subscription.

Many Anime Have Disappeared From Streaming

As navigating streaming platforms becomes more difficult, their availability is also posing a new challenge, as they are becoming increasingly unreliable. Beyond rising costs and fractured streaming, there are entire series that have disappeared from legal streaming services. While these removals could come with a notice ahead of time, many viewers report titles disappearing without warning.

Without any legal streaming options, accessibility for these titles is significantly reduced, limiting discovery for new viewers and complicating revisits for longtime fans.

In the past year, several notable anime have already been affected by this, including Noragami, Claymore, 91 Days, and Death Parade. All four of these series have dedicated fan bases and are often recommended, yet none are available to stream as of 2026, making it virtually impossible to watch legally.

The disappearance of these series, along with many other unavailable titles, has raised concerns among anime fans. Without any legal streaming options, accessibility for these titles is significantly reduced, limiting discovery for new viewers and complicating revisits for longtime fans. This has pushed many viewers to consider alternatives that offer permanence at a much lower cost.

In response to the growing uncertainty surrounding how anime is consumed, many fans are beginning to openly discuss returning to physical media and encouraging others to do the same. Blu-rays and DVDs are making a resurgence, with many turning to them as a better option for viewing anime.

The most recurring sentiment in these discussions centers on permanent ownership. Access to titles through streaming or digital purchases is often tied to licenses that can change or expire, leaving viewers without long-term control. Physical copies, on the other hand, ensure continuous access regardless of platform availability and without recurring charges.

With subscription costs rising, fragmented catalogs, and disappearing titles, the idea of turning back to physical copies is growing more appealing to many viewers. By owning the Blu-ray or DVD copies of anime, fans will pay less in the long run and never have to worry about losing access to their favorite titles.
