Despite having a proper and satisfying ending, along with very straightforward storylines, Sons of Anarchy hasn’t been safe from theories, and one claims that the show’s biggest deaths are the result of a curse awakened by Jax (Charlie Hunnam). Set in the fictional town of Charming, California, Sons of Anarchy follows the many ups and downs of the title motorcycle club, led at the beginning of the show by President Clay Morrow (Ron Perlman) and VP Jackson “Jax” Teller. Throughout seven seasons, Sons of Anarchy follows the club’s issues not just with other groups but also among its members.
Jax is the son of John “JT” Teller, one of the club’s founders, who died in a motorcycle crash when Jax was very young. Clay became the club’s President after JT’s death and married Jax’s mother, Gemma (Katey Sagal), but there were many dark secrets in the family. The events of Sons of Anarchy are kicked off when Jax finds his father’s manifesto, which detailed his vision for the club, and is inspired to make it a reality – however, a theory suggests that this was the beginning of the end for Jax and other characters.

John Teller founded SAMCRO alongside his best friend Piermont “Piney” Winston (William Lucking). Both men served in the army, and when they returned from Vietnam, they saw the deterioration of the country and faced discrimination and economic hardship. JT and Piney decided to form the Sons of Anarchy motorcycle club to rediscover brotherhood, and JT teamed up with Clay for the Teller-Morrow Auto Service. However, as they didn’t have the money needed for the club, SAMCRO began to get involved in the black market, smuggling contraband goods and more.

However, the club started going in a direction that JT wasn’t on board with, and along with suspicions of betrayal and cheating in the club and his marriage, and the death of his youngest son, Thomas, JT was driven to write his manifesto. Titled The Life and Death of Sam Crow: How the Sons of Anarchy Lost Their Way, JT used this manuscript to detail his original vision and ideas for the club, and though the full manifesto hasn’t been revealed, parts of it were shown or read throughout Sons of Anarchy.
Thanks to that, it’s known that JT came up with the club’s name when he was a kid, that he felt lost in his own club, began to trust few and fear most, and was considering leaving the club and going Nomad. JT also used his manuscript to criticize some of SAMCRO’s actions, such as what they do to avenge a loved one, with JT explaining that a true outlaw finds balance between “the passion in his heart and the reason in his mind”, and shared that he learned that true freedom requires sacrifice.
The Nomad charter of SAMCRO had no geographic base, but this group was disbanded in Sons of Anarchy season 5.
JT also admitted SAMCRO got out of his hands and became its own thing, and everything he pointed out continued and even grew after his death and once Clay took over as President. Jax found JT’s manifesto at the beginning of Sons of Anarchy, and as he had only known the version of the club led by Clay, his father’s ideas were something new and hopeful for him. Jax spent most of Sons of Anarchy trying to fulfill his father’s wishes as expressed in the manuscript, but that only brought more chaos and even death, which is why a theory suggests the manifesto was cursed.
The theory, shared by CBR, claims that JT’s manuscript is cursed, and those who come into contact with it or too close end up dead – and these are violent deaths. The theory says that the manifesto claimed the lives of Jax’s wife Tara (Maggie Siff), Piney, Clay, Gemma, and Jax, all of them dying after reading it, though not exactly as a direct result of learning what was in it.
Tara was killed by Gemma after the latter thought the former had ratted on the club (and Tara knew the truth about JT’s death); Piney was killed by Clay as he also knew about Clay’s involvement in JT’s death; Clay was killed by Jax for his many crimes and betrayals; Gemma was killed by Jax for Tara’s murder, and Jax had to die because of some of his actions.

The theory about JT’s manifesto being cursed includes one of Sons of Anarchy’s most tragic deaths, even though this character never read it. According to it, Opie’s (Ryan Hurst) death is also part of the curse, but he was more like collateral damage. Opie was Piney’s son, and he and Jax were best friends since they were kids. Opie and Jax were SAMCRO’s legacies, and though they went through some difficult moments, they were best friends until the very end.
Opie never read JT’s manifesto, but he was supportive of Jax’s decisions based on what his father envisioned for SAMCRO.
Since Sons of Anarchy season 1, Opie had grown disillusioned with SAMCRO, which only got worse after his wife’s murder and later Piney’s. However, he still sacrificed himself for the club and his brothers, becoming one of the most heartbreaking deaths of the show. In Sons of Anarchy season 5, Jax, Opie, Tig (Kim Coates), and Chibs (Tommy Flanagan) were arrested, with Damon Pope forcing Jax into a deal that included one of them dying in prison. Opie stepped in and sacrificed himself, and was killed in front of his brothers.

How Jax Saved His Sons From His Family’s Curse (Twice)
If There Was A Curse, Jax Effectively Ended It
If there was indeed a curse in JT’s manuscript that led to the death of anyone who came into contact with it, Jax made sure to end that family curse… twice. Jax ultimately decided to burn all copies of his father’s manifesto along with his own manuscripts, as during Sons of Anarchy season 5, he had started writing his own manifesto. With this, Jax saved his sons and anyone else who could have found and read JT’s manifesto and his own from a horrible future, while also setting SAMCRO free from both.
At the end of Sons of Anarchy, Jax did something else to ensure that his sons wouldn’t be involved with SAMCRO. Jax arranged for his sons to leave Charming with Nero (Jimmy Smits) and Wendy (Drea de Matteo), so they wouldn’t be surrounded by the culture of outlaw life and all the clubs. However, Gemma left the club’s rings to Jax’s oldest son, hinting at him possibly returning to Charming in the future to claim a spot in the club.
