AEW hasn’t treated all ex-WWE guys particularly well, but Swerve Strickland has mostly been taken care of. Would he consider a WWE return, though?
As soon as Hit Row popped back up on WWE Friday Night SmackDown, AEW fans all seemed to wonder if Swerve Strickland would be interested in rejoining his former group on the blue brand. He’s currently amid an AEW Tag-Team Championship run alongside fellow former WWE star Keith Lee. Swerve In Our Glory, as the team is called, won the belts back on the July 13 episode of Wednesday Night Dynamite and have successfully defended them twice, both times on Friday Night Rampage.
It’s not the most prominent spot, but Lee and Strickland have received a decent chunk of time on the mic to build up their matches. They also have an interesting dynamic because it feels like they are two opposing forces who have decided to work together. A breakup will likely happen eventually, but Swerve and Keith are a month into their first tag-team title reign for now. That’s a far cry from the work the two men were receiving on WWE television.
However, Triple H is running Monday Night Raw and Friday Night SmackDown these days, which has led wrestling fans to wonder whether his former favorites would be interested in returning. Johnny Gargano, Dakota Kai, Dexter Lumis, and IYO SKY have all received big pushes by The Game over the last month. Meanwhile, former NXT Champions such as Kevin Owens and Drew McIntyre appear to have rockets strapped to their backs for the red brand. So, how about it, Swerve? Are you interested in returning to WWE to rejoin Hit Row on the blue brand?
Well, that settles it then. No wrestling fan will wonder whether Strickland wishes he was back in WWE now that his former comrades appear to be in line for a decent push. (A quick peak at the responses to Swerve’s answer will prove that to be untrue.) Still, it’s tough to blame the 31-year-old for feeling like he’s good where he’s at. Swerve In Our Glory is over with AEW fans, and he’s been given enough creative freedom to be his best wrestling self on television.
Fans also need to consider how involved Strickland is in independent promotions outside AEW. WWE would have never allowed him to wrestle for NJPW, PROGRESS, DEFY, Warrior Wrestling, and MLW. Yet he’s worked for all those companies since wrestling his last match for WWE on the October 22, 2021, episode of SmackDown. Swerve In Our Glory isn’t currently booked for the upcoming AEW All Out pay-per-view on September 4, but that could change in the coming weeks as that card comes together.
