Avengers: Doomsday will see Earth’s Mightiest Heroes take on Doctor Doom, and new details from the Marvel Cinematic Universe film have me convinced that Doom will be stronger, and an even greater threat, than Thanos. While some of the strongest villains in the MCU have had abilities almost beyond comprehension, like Ego the Living Planet, there is reason to believe that Doom could be the greatest foe the heroes have yet faced. Some shared details about the cast of Avengers: Doomsday have suggested this.
The MCU did not originally have Doctor Doom planned as the villain of Avengers 5, with the movie formerly titled Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. However, plans were changed after Kang’s MCU debut failed, and Jonathan Majors became embroiled in complex legal issues. I, along with many others, would argue that Kang didn’t work as a big bad villain in the franchise because he was proven not strong enough to defeat Ant-Man. It is important that the threat to the Avengers be one that requires many heroes to fight, as suggested by the details of Avengers: Doomsday.
Avengers: Doomsday’s Cast List Sets Up A Hugely Powerful Hero Roster
Doctor Doom Will Have To Face Some Of Marvel’s Greatest Heroes
The astonishing cast of Avengers: Doomsday was recently revealed, and includes so many powerful heroes and villains from throughout Marvel’s past and present. The cast includes characters of all kinds, from the more grounded Yelena Belova to the godlike Thor and Loki. Adding the X-Men cast to Doomsday helps a great deal, bringing in powerful mutants like Professor X and Magneto to assist in the fight against Doctor Doom. Their abilities are incredible and could culminate in an enormously powerful force.
With Ant-Man, Black Panther, Sentry and more confirmed for the film, it seems that the heroes of Doomsday will make up an incredibly powerful force. Even if an Avengers vs. X-Men event takes place in the film, either one of their universes on their own would be more than enough to stop almost any threat imaginable. Thanos was an incredible force who was defeated by the Avengers as they were in 2019, and the team has only grown in power and in size since then. This suggests the need for an even more powerful foe in order to face them.
Without The Infinity Stones, Doom’s Powers Alone Will Have To Be Enough For Him To Face Many Powerful Heroes
Doctor Doom’s Sorcerous Abilities Need To Be Featured In Doomsday
Thanos was powerful on his own, but he became a distinct threat after gathering the Infinity Stones. These gave him incredible abilities that allowed him to warp different facets of reality in his favor. However, Doom will likely not have a gauntlet or stones like this to assist him in his own pursuits. Instead, Doom will have only his powers to use in his fight against the Avengers, in his attempt to pursue whatever sinister multiversal goal he sets his mind to.
Only through magic could Doom truly be able to stand above Thanos as an even greater threat to the Avengers.
Part of Doctor Doom’s story has been explored in other films, showing the brilliant scientist with access to incredible technology. However, the one component missing, which has been a large part of Doom’s power, has been his access to magic. In addition to his machines, Doom is a great sorcerer, and this will likely be a part of the MCU’s version of the character. Only through magic could Doom truly be able to stand above Thanos as an even greater threat to the Avengers.
The MCU Adapting Avengers: Secret Wars Suggesting Doctor Doom Is Going To Get His Own Major Power Upgrade
God Emperor Doom Could Be The Next Great MCU Threat
The MCU has been different from the comics in many ways, and it is unlikely that the upcoming film Avengers: Secret Wars will be a direct adaptation of either of the Secret Wars comic stories. However, one feature that is likely to appear is Doctor Doom’s becoming God Emperor Doom in Avengers: Secret Wars. In the comics, Doom stole the power of the Beyonders and created Battleworld, bringing him to the most powerful state he has ever been seen in.
With powers over reality, and abilities that allow him to shape the universe itself, God Emperor Doom is a threat that the Thanos of the movies, if not the comics, could not stand up to. If Doom is able to achieve this form in the films, he might become the most powerful villain that has yet appeared in the MCU. This would make such a large and assorted group of heroes as the cast of Doomsday essential in the fight against Doctor Doom and their endeavor to save the multiverse.

The Avengers: Doomsday live stream confirmed exactly what the mystery posed in the Captain America: Brave New World post-credits scene means.
The next big MCU villain needs to show themselves to be an incredible threat, and no one has greater potential for this than Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday. The new film clearly has one of the most powerful assemblages of heroes imaginable, and it is important that their antagonist be strong enough to pose a genuine threat. With a performer like Robert Downey Jr. behind the mask, I believe it is all but assured that Doctor Doom will be charismatic, powerful, and one of the most memorable villains Marvel has yet seen.
