Dragon Ball Super Artist Acknowledges Vegeta Continuity Error

Dragon Ball Super Artist Acknowledges Vegeta Continuity Error

Dragon Ball Super’s Toyotaro has called fan attention to a continuity error regarding series antihero Vegeta in his and Goku’s battle against Gas.

Warning: contains spoilers for Dragon Ball Super chapter 84!

Toyotaro – the artist of ongoing manga Dragon Ball Super – has called out an art error in the latest instalment, where Vegeta is shown frequently missing an important aspect of his costume.

Dragon Ball Super chapter 84 sees Goku and Vegeta face off against Gas in a no-holds-barred battle which actually seems to stagger the ultra-powerful villain. Vegeta in particular gets to showcase his indefatigable desire to win, unleashing a God of Destruction move and staying standing when he should be way past his limit, declaring that damage is nothing but fuel. It’s an example of how Vegeta can push past even his own sky-high power levels to surprise his opponents, and a show of power that emphasizes how much he learned from his unoffical mentor Beerus. However, while Vegeta may have learned from the God of Destruction, he’s seemingly unwilling to acknowledge it.

In Dragon Ball Super chapter 71, Vegeta was gifted an earring by Beerus, Universe 7’s God of Destruction, as a symbol that he’s able to use the power of Destruction. While Beerus and Vegeta are generally too proud to admit a teacher/student relationship, the deity did allow Vegeta to effectively ride along on a demonstration of his own abilities, where he picked up some epic new skills. Unfortunately, even as Vegeta unleashes those skills against Gas, his symbolic earring is in and out of the art, sometimes appearing on Vegeta and sometimes not. This is acknowledged as an error in a recent tweet from Toyotaro, in which the creator reminds fans of the release of the V-Jump magazine, but states that the Dragon Ball Super chapter contains a lot of panels where Vegeta’s ear cuff is missing and that fans should imagine it’s present, ending with an apologetic emoji.

The comment was a humorous way to acknowledge a minor error, and suggests the artist caught the inconsistency between drawing the issue and its publication. Small errors in individual issues are usually fixed ahead of larger manga collections, meaning both that those who collect the series by volume won’t see this continuity error in action, and that the latest issue of V-Jump is likely to be a minor collector’s item for featuring the vanishing and reappearing earring.

Manga chapters are often created to tight deadlines, and errors like this are generally understood to be part of the fun of reading each new installment as it’s released, though there are always fans who will be irritated by this kind of slip-up. In the case of Dragon Ball Super however, it’s safe to say that the series’ dedicated fanbase are unlikely to give Toyotaro a hard time, especially given the amusing coincidence that Vegeta is sporadically failing to honor a teacher who has been unwilling in the past to acknowledge him as a student.
