From the very first episode, Jace’s tragic death failed to capture the same heroism his character displayed in Fire & Blood, while the erasure of Nettles fundamentally rewrote both Sheepstealer’s story and the Battle of the Gullet itself.
The rest of the season was also packed with controversial moments, from major rewrites to Hugh Hammer’s motivations to Aemond’s new Alicent obsession all the way up to Rhaenyra’s messianic High Valyrian speech proclaiming herself as the Prince That Was Promised, essentially retconning a major Game of Thrones mystery.
However, arguably the most controversial moment was Helaena’s tragic suicide in the finale after the show completely omitted a central character from the original books motivating that decision. That said, fans will have one last moment with Helaena for a limited time, thanks to a brand-new announcement for The Dreamer’s Curse, available until October 1 (via GoTD).

In a recent update from developers for Game of Thrones: Dragonfire, players will be able celebrate House of the Dragon‘s Season 3 run for a limited time, claiming the exclusive in-game “watch-along” rewards until October 1, as well as a unique Season 3 Finale Chest and Event until August 24.
Part of this celebration post was also a recap of the exclusive seasonal events released during each episode of the season, one of which, The Dreamer’s Curse, was specifically tied to Helaena’s visions and eventual demise:
Dreams coil like dragons beneath the skin of the realm. Helaena’s words fall soft as ash—yet those who listen, tremble.
While the event itself is no longer accessible in-game, the rewards associated with it and the House of the Dragon episode are, which include Episode 5’s 2,000 Amplifier Seals reward available for just a few more weeks. The end-of-season event will also see the return of iconic characters, and give fans one last send-off before the long wait for the final season in 2028.
Helaena’s death was especially controversial this season, largely because the show erased Maelor entirely, removing the core motivation that drives her suicide in Fire & Blood.
It’s exactly the kind of cascading change George R.R. Martin warned about in his now-deleted 2024 blog post, “Beware the Butterflies,” where he specifically argued that cutting Maelor would undercut Helaena’s motivation and create increasingly damaging “butterfly” effects later in the story, making the finale’s shot of literal butterflies surrounding Alicent immediately after Helaena’s death feel to some fans like a pointed jab at the author, although HBO has never confirmed that was the intent.
