Ghost of Yotei is an exceptionally distant sequel; set 329 years after Ghost of Tsushima, Yotei tells an entirely self-contained story. In the opening moments, you witness the single-most important event in Atsu’s life: being impaled by a sword to her family’s ginkgo tree, which is then set on fire, after her mother, father, and brother are murdered. The perpetrators are the Yotei Six, in Atsu’s youth a band of outlaws with big aspirations. Atsu’s desire for revenge then stews for 16 years, and the game picks up upon her return to Yotei‘s version of Ezo.
[Warning: Major spoilers for Ghost of Yotei.]
Surviving the Night of the Burning Tree, Atsu spent the remainder of her formative years and the beginning of adulthood as a mercenary in the south. Three years before the Tokugawa Shogunate officially consolidates control of Honshu, Atsu fights in the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600. In 1603, Atsu’s return to Ezo – modern day Hokkaido – coincides with the Shogunate’s attempt to pacify the region. The Matsumae, a real-life clan hailing from the southern tip of Ezo, are the predominant samurai at war with the Yotei Six, who rule viciously.
The Snake Is Killed & The Legend Of The Onryō Begins
Prelude
Before the bloody eye-candy of Ghost of Yotei properly sets players loose in Ezo, there is a short introductory and tutorial sequence which sets up an important part of Atsu’s character. Easily cutting through a handful of henchmen, Atsu comes face-to-face with the first name on her list – the Snake. The duel practically ends in a stalemate, with Atsu and the Snake stabbing each other.
The Snake dies, but Atsu gasps back to life, shocking onlookers. So begins the legend of the Onryō, a ghost of vengeance. Atsu uses the Snake’s blood on her katana to cross his name off of her sash, which lists the members of the Yotei Six: the Snake, the Kitsune, the Oni, the Dragon, the Spider, and Lord Saito.
The Hunt For The Kitsune & The Oni
Chapter 1
Starting from her family’s abandoned home in the Yotei Grasslands, where the ginkgo tree is miraculously sprouting new leaves, Atsu’s sets out to find the remaining members of the Yotei Six. She can easily pick up rumors about all five, but leads quickly run dry. The Dragon and the Spider, Lord Saito’s sons collectively known as the Saito brothers, remain elusive. On her journey, Atsu befriends and frequently helps a wolf, who is waging her own war against the Yotei Six, whose soldiers are thinning Ezo’s wolf population.
Lord Saito himself is said to frequent a training fort not far to the northeast, in a region known as Tokachi Range. In his attempt to remain independent of the Shogunate, Saito recruits all manner of mercenaries and rōnin, regardless of skill, promising the prestige of being samurai and the opportunity to paradoxically lord over Ezo without honor. Infiltrating Saito’s fort in Tokachi Range, Atsu confronts the leader of the Yotei Six, who toys with her in a duel before they’re interrupted by a Matsumae siege, whereupon Saito escapes and his trail grows cold.
Ghost of Yotei lets you follow leads in any order, but you’ll eventually have to choose between the Kitsune and the Oni (you could conceivably do both simultaneously, but it would involve a lot of disjointed story arcs and traveling between regions). Hunting the Kitsune first makes the most sense for the narrative, if only because gameplay mechanics introduced along the way are foundational to Atsu as an effective shinobi.
The Kitsune is Lord Saito’s spymaster who, 16 years prior, helped the Yotei Six leader hang Atsu’s mother, Yone, in front of the young girl. Following rumors north out of Tokachi Range, Atsu takes a ferry across the Great Lake and arrives in the Nayoro Wilds, a mountain valley settled by the indigenous Ainu people. Atsu proves herself benevolent to the Ainu, who are a constant presence in the game, primarily emphasizing the brutality of the Yotei Six, but also showing that the yoke of the Matsumae can be nearly as heavy.
Going even further north, Atsu follows the Kitsune’s trail to Ezo’s most frigid region, Teshio Ridge. She’s immediately set upon by a band of shinobi, and poisoned by the Kitsune, resulting in debilitating hallucinations. The Kitsune leaves Atsu alive as a test of strength, and she barely survives Teshio Ridge’s freezing temperatures. Eventually making her way to the local inn, Atsu joins forces with a traveling Shamisen player, Oyuki, who seems particularly adept at thwarting the Kitsune’s shinobi cohorts, the Nine Tails.
Atsu eventually comes to realize that Oyuki is the Kitsune – or was the Kitsune. Flashbacks show that the Kitsune let Atsu escape the Night of the Burning Tree, defying Lord Saito as Yone was hanged. Filled with regret for her role in Atsu’s family’s murder, Oyuki abandoned Saito, and her apprentice, Dojun, ascended to become the Kitsune and the Yotei Six’s new spymaster.
Oyuki vows to atone by helping Atsu pursue vengeance. Together, Oyuki and Atsu kill the Kitsune, Atsu crosses another name off her sash, and the two plan to regroup at Atsu’s family home. With only one warm trail remaining, Atsu heads to Ishikari Plain, northwest of her home in the Yotei Grasslands, to pursue the Oni.
On the Night of the Burning Tree, Atsu and her brother Jubei attempted to stop the Oni from mercilessly beating their father, Kengo. Jubei’s failed attack saw him grabbed around the neck and thrown by the Oni, but Atsu managed to strike a single blow, breaking a large piece of the Oni’s mask and leaving a gruesome scar across his left eye. Quickly recovering, however, the Oni drove a katana through Kengo’s back, killing the blacksmith in front of his children.
In Ishikari Plain, Atsu comes into contact with a Matsumae samurai named Lord Kitamori. Kitamori quickly reveals himself to be Jubei, who also miraculously survived their parents’ murder. Kitamori, having build a new life among the Matsumae, is now one of the central figures in the clan’s campaign against the Oni, who rules over Ishikari Plain with an iron fist.
Atsu poses as a mercenary who has captured Lord Kitamori in order to infiltrate the Oni’s castle, but the plan fails when Atsu is discovered because of her sentimental reaction to seeing her father’s katana sheath, taken by the Oni on the Night of the Burning Tree. The Oni retaliates by destroying the Matsumae’s foothold in the region, emboldening Atsu and Jubei to sneak into the Oni’s fortress and free the Matsumae prisoners, which causes a revolt that affords them the opportunity to cut down the Oni together.
The Hunt For The Dragon & The Spider
Chapter 2
Atsu and Jubei meet Oyuki at the siblings’ old home, and Jubei is barely talked down from killing the former Kitsune. He begrudgingly recognizes that Oyuki’s talents can help in the fight against the Saito brothers, who are challenging the Matsumae’s Shogun-appointed stewardship on Oshima Coast, Ezo’s southernmost region. The Matsumae Peninsula was the real-world Matsumae clan’s seat of power, where it was tasked with protecting the Shogunate from the barbarous Ainu – who are depicted in Yotei as singularly peace-loving, and often victimized – in the north.
Matsumae Disctrict, Hokkaido is named after the Matsumae clan, and Matsumae Castle has been restored. Check out this photo of it on Wikipedia, which looks nearly exactly like its digital counterpart in Yotei.
The big revelation in Oshima Coast is that Jubei has a daughter, Kiku, and thus, Atsu has a niece. Jubei has clearly sheltered Kiku to some degree, refusing to teach Kiku how to defend herself, despite the war with the Yotei Six escalating for some time. With Atsu’s and Oyuki’s help (the latter begrudgingly accepted) Jubei begins to tutor Kiku in basic survival and combat skills.
Kiku’s training gets put into slight action when she shows Atsu and Oyuki a back entrance to a local estate, which has been claimed by the Spider. Atsu and Oyuki infiltrate the estate and pose as performers, donning masks. Atsu fittingly chooses an onryō mask, now that the legend she personifies has claimed half of the Yotei Six’s lives. When Atsu learns that the Night of the Burning Tree has been adapted into a play and is being performed for the Spider, she goes into a rage.
Atsu slaughters the Spider’s forces, but manages to control herself enough to capture the Spider, according to the plan devised by her, Oyuki, and Jubei. Instead of going home as she was told, Kiku waits outside the estate, and is horrified at the sight of Atsu, who is covered from head to toe in blood. This is a key moment in Atsu realizing that she truly has become the Onyrō – does she have anything other than her lust for revenge?
With the Spider in hand, a trap is laid on the beach outside Matsumae Castle. The trio prepare the Spider’s execution, knowing his brother, the Dragon, will surely come to his rescue. Instead of luring only the Dragon, the Spider’s capture prompts a full, unexpected assault by Lord Saito, who appears on the beach personally alongside the Dragon while his fleet bombards the castle.
Unable to see past the immediate opportunity for revenge, Atsu can’t will herself to join Jubei and Oyuki in falling back to the castle, in protecting Jubei’s new home and Kiku herself. Atsu clashes with the Dragon on the beach, with the Spider eventually freed from his bonds and grabbing a matchlock rifle to join his brother in the fray. Atsu kills the Dragon, crosses his name off her sash, and the Spider flees as Matsumae Castle falls. Kiku is found alive, but Jubei and Oyuki are both missing.
Confronting Lord Saito
Chapter 3
Atsu takes Kiku back to her home in the Yotei Grasslands, and begins a renewed search for the Spider. Upon cornering her prey, she learns that Saito disowned his surviving son, having blamed him for the Dragon’s death. The Spider informs Atsu that Jubei and Oyuki are indeed alive, and are being held captive at Saito’s castle. Reflecting on what’s left of her humanity, Atsu cuts a deal to have the Spider take her there, after which she spares the Spider, allowing him to travel south and start a new life.
Saito’s castle, Koga Fortress, is hidden in the mountains east of the Great Lake, between Tokachi Range and the Nayoro Wilds. Atsu realizes that her thirst for revenge has only led to more tragedy, and she vows to save Jubei and Oyuki even if it means letting Saito live. She manages a solo infiltration of the castle, and intervenes before Jubei can be executed. The siblings then kill the men watching a captive Oyuki, who Lord Saito was saving for some unspecified, likely appalling punishment for her betrayal as the Kitsune.
With her mission accomplished, Atsu prepares to escape Koga Fortress, but Oyuki mentions that she overheard that Saito intends to avenge his sons “where it all began.” The three fight their way out of Koga Fortress and confront Saito at the siblings’ home, underneath the ginkgo tree. Saito lets Kiku go in exchange for a one-on-one duel with the Onryō, so she can complete her revenge. Atsu burns her sash before all the names can be crossed off, telling Saito she’s found a new purpose in life.
Atsu exhausts Saito’s arsenal, prompting Saito to give what he denied Atsu at his training fortress in Tokachi Range: a duel with katanas. Saito strikes a grievous blow but his coup de grâce is interrupted by Jubei, who has returned after ensuring Kiku is safe with Oyuki – the final step on his own path to letting go of revenge. The siblings appear to be overpowering Lord Saito until Jubei is mortally wounded.
The final bout sees Atsu pinning Saito to the ginkgo tree with her father’s katana (the same blade she was pinned to the tree with) and Saito’s dropped katana. She removes the latter, leaving Saito to bleed out as Kiku returns, sobbing over her dying father.
Jubei’s last word is his daughter’s name; he dies on a bed of vibrant yellow ginkgo tree leaves. Atsu promises to look after Kiku, turns, and embraces the crying girl. The scene then flashes forward six months to show Atsu and Kiku foraging before the onset of winter. Oyuki arrives, much to Kiku’s delight, and as the first snow of the year begins to fall, Atsu places a flower on Jubei’s grave under the ginkgo tree. The wolf makes a final appearance, abd Atsu tells the animal her hunt is complete before the Ghost of Yotei credits roll.
