Night at the Roxbury 2 Story Idea Shared By Chris Kattan

Night at the Roxbury 2 Story Idea Shared By Chris Kattan

Former Saturday Night Live and A Night at the Roxbury actor and star Chris Kattan shares his ideas for a possible A Night at the Roxbury 2.

Former SNL and A Night at the Roxbury star Chris Kattan shares his ideas for A Night at the Roxbury 2. The original film premiered in 1998 and was expanded from an SNL sketch that starred Kattan and Will Ferrell. The sketches were set in various nightclubs where Ferrell and Kattan would attempt to pick up women and get rejected.

The two SNL alumni play brothers Steve Butabi (played by Ferrell) and Doug Butabi (played by Kattan) in the film, who, similar to the sketch, enjoy spending most of their time in nightclubs listening to Euro-dance and EDM music while attempting to schmooze women. The film centers on one particular nightclub, the Roxbury, and expands the theme of rejection from the sketches to include the bouncer of the Roxbury, who continuously denies Steve and Doug entrance. By the end of the film, the Butabi brothers not only gain entrance to the Roxbury but also become part owners of a new nightclub.

Now, Kattan shares in an interview with TMZ his idea for A Night at the Roxbury 2. Kattan jokes that his character would most likely start off in prison at the beginning of the sequel and that both brothers would be struggling to fit into a new, younger club scene that they still want to be a part of despite their older age. He also teases that there may be room for a long-lost third brother in the sequel. Kattan notes that, although he and Ferrell are not in direct conversations about doing a sequel, he thinks it would be a fun project, and that viewers would enjoy the outcome.

Kattan also mentions that he envisions the sequel would include Steve being married to Molly Shannon’s character from the original film, Emily. In A Night at the Roxbury, Steve almost marries Emily due in part to Steve’s and Emily’s fathers wanting them to marry each other in order to create an even larger family empire in lamp and plant products. Emily ends up marrying Steve’s and Doug’s friend, but it looks like in Kattan’s mind, Steve and Emily are the true star-crossed lovers. Although some fans may balk at the idea of Steve being married to Emily, because it would mean Steve would not be able to be comically rejected by women in nightclubs, the chance to have more screen time with the exemplary comedic actor Shannon may be worth sacrificing a few scenes of Ferrell being humiliated by his failed attempts at romance.

A Night at the Roxbury was written by Ferrell, Kattan, and Steve Koren, another former SNL writer. Although the film was initially panned by critics and received a nine percent critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, the film has gained a fan following like many other goofy films from the 90s. Should Ferrell, Kattan, and Koren return to write a sequel, there may be a chance that it can satisfy nostalgic viewers craving a fun movie that certainly won’t win an Oscar, but will provide some laughs due to the absurd world that the Butabi brothers exist in. For now, viewers will have to keep their eyes and ears open as to whether A Night at the Roxbury 2 will be in the works, and who the potential third Butabi brother may be.
