An upcoming crime thriller on Prime Video has the potential to become Bosch‘s perfect replacement and Ballard‘s best rival. Since Ballard serves as the first follow-up to Bosch and Bosch: Legacy, it was expected to fill the void left by the Titus Welliver show in more ways than one. While Ballard in itself is an incredible crime thriller series, it seems significantly different from its parent series.
Despite featuring small appearances from Harry Bosch, Ballard seems to operate more as an ensemble team procedural. Even in terms of pace, it feels far quicker than Bosch as primarily a multi-character dynamic while mixing procedural elements with institutional corruption. Ballard‘s perfect 100% Rotten Tomatoes score proves it is one of Prime Video’s best crime thriller offerings.
However, a closer look at the differences between Bosch and Ballard highlights how Prime Video is yet to find a worthy replacement for the Titus Welliver show. Interestingly, Reacher‘s upcoming spin-off, Neagley, seems to have what it takes to become the next Bosch. Details from the series’ storyline and trailer suggest that it will be less like its parent show, Reacher, and more like Bosch in more ways than one.
Neagley Feels Like An R-Rated Bosch
Alan Ritchson’s Jack Reacher does a lot of investigative work during his crime-solving endeavors. However, his primary appeal comes from his near-superhuman strength. It is his larger-than-life personality and dominating presence that truly makes him a distinct action thriller hero. Maria Sten’s Frances Neagley is significantly different and seems more like Harry Bosch.
Similar to Bosch, she relies less on flashy theatrics and her investigations are purely driven by operational discipline. While she has the ability to stand her ground in a fistfight, Neagley is more cerebral with her approach. As established in Reacher, Neagley also does not move from one town to another, claiming to be a hobo.
Instead, like Harry Bosch, she stays rooted in one city, working within a professional investigative framework and solving cases through meticulous detective work rather than sheer physical intimidation.
While Ballard seems to operate well within the legal system, Neagley, like Bosch, eventually ditches her legal background and works as a personal investigator. As her backstory suggests, she, too, was once a victim of departmental politics and bureaucratic corruption, which prompted her to leave the military and do her own thing.
Although Neagley is far more open to working with a full-fledged team than Jack Reacher, she, too, is more or less of a lone wolf like Harry Bosch. Her extreme personal boundaries and haptephobia (aversion to touch) push that stoic, untethered persona even further.
Perhaps the only big difference between Neagley and Bosch will be that the former’s stories will be driven by more violence. Since Neagley is Reacher‘s spin-off, it will feature many slam-bang action sequences that will not hold back from featuring bloodshed and brutal hand-to-hand combat.
Ballard Is Incredible, But Neagley Has 1 Solid Advantage
Ballard has been an incredible addition to Prime Video’s Bosch franchise, and its imminent return with season 2 proves that even its commercial numbers have not been disappointing. While only time will tell whether Neagley will match its critical and commercial success, the Reacher spin-off already has one big advantage. Unlike Ballard, it will stream simultaneously with Reacher.
While Ballard has been treated more like an extension of the established Bosch universe, Neagley will unfold as an alternate branch of the Reacher franchise. It will perfectly fill the gaps between Reacher‘s seasons, allowing it to leverage the growing popularity of its parent series.
The Neagley spin-off premieres on Prime Video on September 16, 2026.
The Neagley spin-off’s season 1 is also set to premiere on Prime Video the day Reacher season 4 ends its run. This again favors the series and allows it to capitalize on the parent show’s success. Unlike Ballard, Neagley is also not based on any books, which allows it to enjoy a lot more creative freedom.
Hopefully, like Bosch, Ballard, and Reacher, the Neagley spin-off, too, will prove to be a worthy addition to Prime Video‘s impressive crime thriller catalog.
