Rob Zombie’s Munsters Image Includes Joke From Original ‘60s Show

Rob Zombie’s Munsters reboot already looks to have jokes from the original sitcom, with the movie’s latest image giving Grandpa a Playghoul magazine.

Rob Zombie is teasing his latest film, The Munsters, on social media and including a nod to the original 1960s show. The filmmaker made his directorial debut in 2003 with House of 1000 Corpses and has since made a name for himself in modern horror, leading projects like The Devil’s Rejects, The Lords of Salem, 3 from Hell, and 2007’s Halloween remake, all of which have amassed cult followings. The Munsters, written and directed by Zombie, is a dark comedy based on the popular television sitcom of the same name and will observe a family of monsters, including vampires, a werewolf, and Frankenstein’s creature, who settle in the American Suburb of Mockingbird Heights after relocating from Transylvania. The film’s cast includes Pat Priest, who played Marilyn Munster in the original series, as well as Sheri Moon Zombie, Jeff Daniel Phillips, Daniel Roebuck, Richard Brake, Sylvester McCoy, and Jorge Garcia.

    SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Ahead of The Munsters‘ release, Zombie has been offering fans a lot of behind-the-scenes looks and documenting its progress on social media. Some of the more exciting sneak peeks have revolved around the family’s home, 1313 Mockingbird Lane, with the director going as far as to reveal interior images of its elaborate construction and gothic details. Additionally, fans have gotten to see the outside of the house, along with a glimpse at the neighborhood, and have been expressing their excitement over the recreation. Zombie has even gone on to share photos of the filming process of The Munsters, involving monitor views of the cast on set in costume.

Now, Zombie is celebrating Friday the 13th by again teasing The Munsters, which includes a joke from the original ’60s series. The director posted an image to his Instagram featuring Lily Munster and Herman Munster, as well as Grandpa, who is holding a magazine titled Playghoul, a spoof of Playboy that originated in the original ’60s sitcom. Fans have recognized how excited Zombie is about The Munsters‘ revival, and his admiration for the source material has been expressed in a number of ways. In addition to the Playgoul nod, the director also shared his respect for actor Robert Morse following his recent passing. Morse portrayed the character of Grandpa in the 1995 television movie, Here Come the Munsters, and after the news of his death, Zombie posted a tribute on his Instagram. With such a love and knowledge of the history of The Munsters, fans should feel confident that Zombie will deliver a faithful reboot.

While no official release date for The Munsters has been given yet, multiple cast members, such as Sylvester McCoy and Catherine Schell, have wrapped filming, indicating that production is moving along. News of the film’s PG rating also seems to suggest that Zombie’s latest feature will be unlike his previous works and lighter in tone. Fans can look forward to seeing how it all comes together and how he personalizes this revival when The Munsters is released this Fall.
