Ryan Reynolds Wants To Cameo In HBO Max’s Hit DC Series 15 Years After Green Lantern

Ryan Reynolds Wants To Cameo In HBO Max’s Hit DC Series 15 Years After Green Lantern

Ryan Reynolds may not be completely done with the Green Lantern universe after all, as the actor has shared his interest in appearing in HBO Max’s hit DC series Lanterns.

Reynolds famously played Hal Jordan in 2011’s Green Lantern, a role that has followed him throughout his career despite the movie’s poor reception. Now, 15 years later, the actor is open to potentially returning to the world.

Speaking with Entertainment Tonight, Reynolds was asked about the possibility of making a cameo in Lanterns. Watch Reynolds’ response here:

A Reynolds appearance would be an especially fun full-circle moment given his history with the DC character. Green Lantern was intended to launch a larger superhero franchise, but the movie struggled with critics and at the box office, ultimately ending those plans. Reynolds has since poked jokes at the movie, most famously through his Deadpool franchise (The end credits of Deadpool 2 especially).

The 2011 movie also holds a much more positive place in Reynolds’ personal life. He starred opposite Blake Lively, who played Carol Ferris, and the two met while working on the film before eventually marrying in 2012.

Despite all of Reynolds’ jokes about Green Lantern over the years, the movie ended up having a lasting impact on his life beyond his superhero career.

Lanterns, however, shows a totally different take on the Green Lantern mythological lore. The HBO Max series stars Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, with the story following the two Green Lanterns as they investigate a murder in the American heartland. The series is part of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s growing DC Universe and marks the franchise’s first major live-action exploration of the Green Lantern Corps.

Chandler taking over the role of Hal makes Reynolds’ appearance even more interesting. It seems like the actor wouldn’t be returning as the DCU’s version of the character he played in 2011, but could potentially appear in a small cameo that acknowledges his history with the franchise without interfering with the new continuity.

It would also ultimately fit Reynolds’ sense of humor and wittiness. The actor has never been shy about revisiting his superhero past, with the Deadpool 2 end credits scene and Deadpool & Wolverine similarly embracing Marvel and superhero movie history through its many cameos and meta jokes.

The DC universe is really just getting started with the Green Lantern Corps, and seeing Reynolds potentially making a cameo in Lanterns would be a huge win for the audience.
