Shameless’ Emmy Rossum Devastated When She Didn’t Get Fantastic 4 Role

Shameless’ Emmy Rossum Devastated When She Didn’t Get Fantastic 4 Role

Shameless star Emmy Rossum auditioned for Sue Storm in 2015’s Fantastic 4, and she was “utterly devastated” when she did not get the part.

Emmy Rossum, known for Shameless, was “devastated” to learn that she did not land a role in Fantastic Four. Rossum is an actress, singer, producer, and director who has been in the business since she was a teenager. She played the role of Christine Daaé in 2004’s The Phantom of the Opera, earning her a Golden Globe nomination at just 18 years old.

Over the last few years, Rossum is best known for her role as Fiona Gallagher on Showtime’s hit series Shameless. As the selfless eldest child of the Gallagher family, a lot of the responsibilities fall to Fiona, but by season 9, she realizes her siblings are grown enough and leaves Chicago behind her. This marked Rossum’s departure from Shameless as well. The series ran for a total of eleven seasons, ending in April of 2021 with numerous awards to its name.

During a recent interview with Joshua Horowitz on his Happy Sad Confused podcast, Rossum discusses auditioning for the role of Sue Storm in the 2015 Fantastic Four film. She explains that she did not get the part that eventually went to Kate Mara because she did not quite connect with the dialogue or the character. Though Rossum speaks about the experience with a smile now, she describes her feelings at the time she received the news that she did not have the part:

Devastated. Utterly devastated. I remember where I was when I didn’t get it. I was with my now-husband on a beach somewhere, and I got the call that I didn’t get it. I was pretty sure I didn’t get it because I did not feel that the screen test went well… It’s like devastating because you’ve kind of, like, gotten a little pregnant with the idea of doing this, even if you don’t think you would be particularly great in it.

The Fantastic Four reboot also stars Jamie Bell, Miles Teller, and Michael B. Jordan to create the team who must use their new powers to work together to fight Victor Von Doom. Critics and audiences alike panned the Marvel film, which suffered under heavy studio influence and mandated reshoots, which director Josh Trank blames for the disappointing final product. It even won a few Golden Raspberry Awards, including Worst Director and Worst Picture.

The sequel to Fantastic Four was subsequently canceled, so Rossum would have eventually been disappointed even if she had landed the part of Sue Storm. As devastating as it was at the time, missing out on that role frees Rossum up to possibly join a different superhero film in the future. Marvel even has a new Fantastic Four film in the works now, so it’s not out of the realm of possibility that she could audition for Sue Storm again. Rossum has proven what a talented actress she is, and it would be interesting to see what she does in an action role.
