Warning: SPOILERS ahead for Sweet Revenge (2025)!Sweet Revenge director Mike P. Nelson hints at huge ideas for the Friday the 13th franchise and the types of stories he wants to tell. While the other Friday the 13th movies exist in their own canons, the short film Sweet Revenge offers a new beginning for the series during its 45th anniversary, written and directed by Nelson.
Speaking with ScreenRant, Nelson and star Ally Ioannides discussed ideas for how the story after Sweet Revenge could play out. Both agreed the fight set up between Jason and Eve at the end may not have been a fight at all, with Nelson explained the kind of character dynamics that could have played out while staying true to the franchise’s expectations:
ScreenRant: I’d love to see how that fight ends, at the end. Have you talked about how that ends up turning out?
Mike P. Nelson: Who’s to say there’s a fight?
Ally Ioannides: Exactly. I was going to say.
Mike P. Nelson: Who’s to say something else doesn’t happen there? For me, it’s a moment where there might be a little bit more realization than just a quick step into violence. Or, maybe it starts with violence, and then there’s a realization.
When you’re watching the short, Jason goes through some things with Eve; if you’re paying attention, you know he has the moment to freaking off her right there, but he doesn’t. And then, when he tries to off her, she doesn’t get offed, and then she comes back, and they’re literally staring at each other.
In my mind, I’m thinking, “Well, they both know something’s up now.” And I don’t want to spoil too much of what I feel like could happen right after that, but I think there’s more than just.. We’ll call it the Freddy vs. Jason duke-em-out kind of thing. I think it goes beyond that.
And I think that’s ultimately where you can make a fun turn within the movies while still keeping true to the source material.
And Jason’s been through a lot; Jason’s been wronged a lot. There’s a reason why he does what he does, whether you agree with it or not. He’s been given a bad hand in life, and this is how he deals with it. [And] what does it look like when somebody else goes through something similar, and then they realize, “Holy s***. There are two of us. Now what do we do?”
What does that look like? I think there’s a lot of fun to be had.
What Nelson’s Statement Says About How Sweet Revenge’s Story Could Continue
Sweet Revenge offered up Jason Vorhees’ return after 16 years, the short film being the first look at the slasher villain as designed by Greg Nicotero for the franchise’s 45th anniversary. It’s also the first of multiple planned projects to bring Friday the 13th back from the dead, including Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights and the upcoming Crystal Lake TV series.
Based on Nelson’s statement, though, it seems like the ending of Sweet Revenge could have gone in a completely different direction from what would be expected of a Friday the 13th movie. There’s a depth to the director’s plans that would have been much different from Jason taking Eve as his final victim, with the movie hinting at much more.
Because of how much potential Sweet Revenge offered for Friday the 13th‘s future, the short film is a perfect showcase of how Jason Vorhees can be reimagined for the modern era. With the franchise holding so much potential for future stories, it’s not surprising Nelson has strong ideas for how the series could continue from here.
Our Take On Nelson’s Ideas For Friday The 13th
Given he said the end of the short film may not have resulted in a fight, Nelson might have plans for Jason that make him a much more dynamic character, even more than his currently existing iterations. While it doesn’t make his actions any less monstrous, it does signify a gray area under which his motivations lie.
This would be the perfect way to introduce a follow-up to Sweet Revenge that doesn’t play by the same slasher rules Friday the 13th has previously established. Depending on what plays out, it could also make Eve a long-running character in the franchise should a new entry actually come to fruition. It would be intriguing to see its future unfold.
