For years, conversations about caregiving have centered on older adults. The focus has often been on rising life expectancy, healthcare costs, and the growing number of Americans who need support as they age.
But another story is unfolding at the same time.
Millions of adults, particularly those in Generation X, are finding themselves caught between competing responsibilities that extend far beyond caring for an aging parent. They are raising children, managing full-time careers, preparing for retirement, navigating their own health concerns, and simultaneously stepping into caregiving roles that can feel impossible to balance.
The result is a growing population of family caregivers who are reaching a breaking point.
According to Jim Prussak, CEO of Applause Home Care, the problem isn’t simply that people are spending more time providing care. The nature of caregiving itself has fundamentally changed.
“Gen X isn’t simply doing more caregiving. They’re doing a different kind of caregiving at a particularly vulnerable point in life,” says Prussak.
The Collision Point of Midlife
Generation X has become the face of what experts commonly call the sandwich generation. Unlike previous generations, many adults in their forties and fifties are simultaneously supporting both older and younger family members.
Parents are living longer, which often means caregiving responsibilities extend over many years rather than months. At the same time, many adult children continue to provide financial and emotional support to children who are staying at home longer, pursuing higher education, or struggling with today’s economic realities.
Layer a demanding career on top of those responsibilities, and the pressure becomes difficult to ignore.
Prussak explains that many Gen X adults are also confronting another reality that previous generations didn’t necessarily experience in the same way. Retirement is no longer a distant concept.
Instead, it sits directly alongside concerns about personal health, financial security, and caregiving responsibilities.
It’s a life stage where multiple major responsibilities collide at exactly the same moment.
The Three Calendars That Define Modern Caregiving
Caregiving is often imagined as a series of visible tasks. Driving a parent to a doctor’s appointment. Picking up medication. Preparing meals. Helping with household chores.
But Prussak argues that those visible responsibilities represent only a small part of the burden.
“It often looks less like one dramatic caregiving event and more like a second job that keeps leaking into every part of the first one,” he says.
Perhaps the most powerful way to understand modern caregiving is through what Prussak describes as three competing calendars.
The first is the work calendar, filled with meetings, deadlines, business travel, and performance expectations.
The second is the parent’s calendar, which may include medical appointments, physical therapy sessions, prescription renewals, transportation needs, home maintenance, and insurance paperwork.
The third is the family calendar, filled with school schedules, sporting events, childcare responsibilities, meal preparation, and countless other daily commitments.
“The caregiver becomes the person trying to make three calendars fit into one 24-hour day,” says Prussak.
That constant coordination creates a type of exhaustion that often goes unnoticed.
The Hidden Cost of Caregiver Burnout
When people think about burnout, they often focus on physical exhaustion. But caregiver burnout is frequently driven by something less visible.
Emotional labor. Mental fatigue. Decision-making. Constant planning.
Caregivers aren’t simply providing assistance. They’re managing schedules, solving problems, coordinating communication between family members, tracking medications, navigating insurance systems, and attempting to anticipate future needs before they become emergencies.
The challenge is that this work rarely has clear boundaries.
Unlike a traditional job, caregiving doesn’t end when the workday is over.
Emails from doctors arrive after hours. A parent may call with an unexpected concern. A prescription needs to be refilled. Transportation has to be rearranged.
Eventually, the feeling of always being responsible can become overwhelming.
Building a More Sustainable Model
Prussak believes one of the biggest mistakes families make is assuming they need to simply work harder.
“You are allowed to have limits,” he says.
He encourages family caregivers to separate responsibilities into two categories: tasks that only they can perform and tasks that can be delegated.
That delegation may include siblings, extended family members, community organizations, healthcare professionals, or paid caregivers.
“The goal shouldn’t be to figure out how to endure more,” Prussak explains. “It should be to build a caregiving arrangement that doesn’t require you to be perpetually overwhelmed.”
This doesn’t mean families should become less involved. It means they should become more intentional about how responsibilities are shared.
Many caregivers experience guilt when they ask for help, believing that seeking outside support somehow reflects a lack of commitment. In reality, building a network of support often strengthens the quality of care while protecting the caregiver’s own well-being.
Caregiving Was Never Meant to Be a One-Person Job
That shift in thinking may become increasingly important as more Americans choose to age at home.
If home-based care simply transfers more responsibilities onto family members, today’s caregiving crisis could become even more severe.
However, if aging at home means building a genuine support system around both older adults and their families, caregiving could become far more sustainable.
The future of elder care may not depend on asking family members to sacrifice more.
Instead, it may depend on recognizing something families have been reluctant to admit for far too long.
Caregiving was never meant to be a one-person job.
