Pane Is Making the Best Retro Trainers You Have Not Heard Of Yet

Let me be honest with you. The retro trainer market has a sameness problem. Every brand is mining the same three archive silhouettes, slapping on a gum sole and calling it heritage. Then something like Pane comes along, builds vintage-style athletic shoes out of genuinely premium leathers with cork midsoles and hand-finished details, and suddenly the category has a pulse again.

Pane is a footwear label built on a simple, slightly eccentric philosophy, summed up by its own slogan: behave as mortals. The brand takes the sports shoes of the mid-century, running flats, training shoes, rugby boots, and rebuilds them as elegant everyday leather footwear, organised into named series rather than endless one-off drops. The construction story is consistent across the range: real leather uppers, Ortholite cushioning, cork midsoles and lightweight rubber outsoles, with every pair shipping with two sets of laces. These are the four pairs to know right now.

    About Pane

Pane designs in series, each exploring one idea properly rather than chasing trends. Pace Nostalgia mines the pure lines of 1950s to 1970s running shoes. Light Training and its No-Gi offshoot strip the trainer back to supple, minimally lined leather. Zephyr Training plays with texture and finishing. Crest Kick brings the attitude. Underfoot, the formula barely changes because it does not need to: Ortholite insoles, cork sheet midsoles for natural resilience and moisture resistance, and cushioned rubber outsoles for lightweight flexibility. Shipping is free, returns run on a 14-day window, and UK delivery takes 10 to 15 business days from dispatch.

    Pane Pace Nostalgia Chestnut Blaze
    Pane

The flagship of the range, and the pair that best explains what Pane is doing.

Drawn from the truly modern running shoes that appeared between the 1950s and 1970s, the Pace Nostalgia 2.0 layers long-nap suede, brushed-metal textured leather, mesh and Nappa leather into one rich, multi-dimensional upper, sharpened with TPU detailing and a subtle asymmetric cut that gives the profile real grace on foot. Inside, a leather and Cambrelle lining sits over a 2mm Ortholite footbed, while the midsole pairs wood with EVA above a natural rubber outsole. Chestnut Blaze is the colourway to want, warm and autumnal without being heavy, and it ships with two sets of vintage-toned laces to change the character entirely.

It looks and builds like a shoe from a far more expensive shelf. Fair warning: sizes in this colourway sell out fast, so move quickly when stock lands.

    Pane Light Training Nogi
    Pane

The most interesting construction story in the range, borrowed from the judo mat.

No-Gi refers to judo practised without the uniform, and Pane applies the concept literally, stripping out the traditional lining so top grain leather sits directly against the foot. The result is a trainer that feels broken in from the first wear, supple where it should be and structured where it matters, with Cambrelle zones handling breathability. Underfoot you get a leather-faced insole over dual-layer cushioning, 5mm of Ortholite and 5mm of latex, then the house cork midsole and a lightweight rubber outsole.

In the off-white Pelican shade, it is the cleanest summer leather trainer on this page. The current run is on pre-sale with dispatch from 2 August, which is precisely the kind of date worth planning around.

    Pane Crest Kick Blue Pulse
    Pane

The pair for anyone whose rotation has gone a bit beige.

The Crest Kick series treats the city as a playground, and the Blue Pulse colourway commits to the idea with distinct layers of blue across a mix of high-gloss mesh, cow suede and crackle-textured leather. The tread borrows climbing-inspired grip patterns with brand-slogan detailing pressed in, while the interior runs premium leather lining, a pigskin-covered insole and 5mm of Ortholite foam over the cork midsole. Two lace options are included, a clean natural white round lace and a reflective speckled version for evenings.

It delivers more design per dollar than almost anything comparable, and it is the pair in this edit that strangers will ask about.

    Pane Zephyr Training Pouch
    Pane

The pair nobody else will own, literally.

The Pouching construction introduces a discreet elastic collar with delicate gathers, giving a gently enveloping fit and a relaxed, sophisticated line. The upper is premium cattle split leather in solid brown with a spark of bright blue, and here is the good bit: every pair is individually hand-distressed using files and rollers, then layered with wax and hand-polished repeatedly, so the wear patterns and tonal depth on your pair cannot be exactly replicated on anyone else’s. A leather-lined insole, 5mm Ortholite, cork midsole and a softer two-piece rubber outsole complete it.

This is the most accessible route to genuinely unique footwear currently on the market.

    Final Thoughts

Pane sits in a rare pocket of the market: proper leather construction, cork-and-Ortholite comfort engineering and distinctive design, all with free worldwide shipping. Sizing runs on standard US, UK and EU conversions from UK 6.5 to 11.5 and beyond depending on the series, the leather softens and moulds with wear, and Pane itself recommends rotating pairs to keep the shape sharp, which is convenient, because after one pair you will want a second.

The retro trainer market needed new blood. It turns out it just needed better manners. Behave as mortals, indeed.
