Try as I might to insist that summer doesn’t end until Halloween, reminders of “real life” are slowly making their way back as we near the end of the season. Back-to-school, no more summer Fridays, and the slow realization that the days are getting shorter are all signals that fall is creeping in. Fall brings the kind of “get after it” energy that makes us want to book every doctor’s appointment and face everything we avoided all summer.

According to celebrity dermatologist Dr. Sheila Farhang—board-certified dermatologist and Mohs skin cancer surgeon, and founder of Avant Dermatology in Tucson and Beverly Hills—the end of summer brings patients seeking sun damage repair. “Most people in their late 30s and early 40s come in from the cumulative effects of sun damage and photoaging,” she says. But is it too late to undo sun damage in your 40s? And what are the best products for sun damage repair? Read on to find out.

The Truth About Sun Damage Repair in Your 40s

There are two reasons we notice sun damage more with every passing summer: it builds cumulatively over time, and healing becomes an uphill battle as we age.

According to Dr. Farhang, skin repair in our forties looks a little different. “Our skin cells just don’t bounce back or recover like they used to, as collagen and elastin production declines.”

Because our natural cell turnover slows with age, sun damage repair in your 40s comes down to choosing products that help speed that process up, while also rebuilding your skin barrier and collagen bank.

Sounds like a lot? Don’t worry—you don’t have to go full beauty-biohacking (unless you want to). Ahead, Dr. Farhang breaks down how to actually address and prevent sun damage while still enjoying what’s left of summer.

What Does Sun Damage Actually Look Like?

Here’s the bad news: any sign of a tan in summer is skin damage. As we get older, the sun doesn’t just give us a tan and freckles—the cumulative effects of all that sun exposure start to show. (Check out our roundup of clean sunless tanners for all the glow without the lasting damage.)

Most often, people start to notice sun damage as:

    • Uneven skin tone
    • Hyperpigmentation or brown spots
    • Redness
    • Fine or deep lines
    • Enlarged pores
    • Changing skin texture
    • Skin laxity

Sun exposure’s effects can also be exaggerated by hormones, which is part of why melasma tends to show up in our 40s. Combined with the stress sun exposure puts on skin, this depletes our collagen and elastin reserves even further. But sun damage doesn’t have to feel inevitable—with the right derm-approved adjustments, a little prevention goes a long way.

How to Prevent Sun Damage in Your 40s

The shift toward preventative wellness has changed how we approach skin health. Skincare is no longer purely aesthetic—it’s no longer just about finding solutions after the fact, but preventing damage from happening in the first place. The best time to start is now.

“It’s never too late,” says Dr. Farhang. “Even at 40, the little things still really do add up.”

The first step in preventing sun damage is sun protection. Luckily, sunscreen has gotten a glow-up in recent years—more of the best formulas are convenient, clean, and non-comedogenic, so they won’t break you out. With reapplication sticks and sprays now widely available, there’s really no excuse not to reapply every two hours.

Post-sun care is on the rise too. It’s not just the soothing drugstore aloe you remember (though that will always be a classic). Look for post-sun serums with ingredients that restore your skin barrier—glycerin and hyaluronic acid for hydration, and vitamin E, ceramides, peptides, and niacinamide for reducing redness and preventing oxidative stress damage.

What Actually Works to Treat Sun Damage

Once your preventative skin-care routine is dialed in, says Dr. Farhang, you can focus on repair. But don’t panic: While in-office treatments do address the cosmetic side of sun damage, most repair actually comes down to increasing cell turnover, boosting collagen, and rebuilding your skin barrier.

So what belongs in your expert-approved sun repair toolkit? “As far as skincare ingredients, the most evidence-supported include a retinoid, vitamin C, and recently, topical peptides,” says Dr. Farhang.

But how do they actually work?

    Retinol for Sun Damage

Retinol is the tried-and-true ingredient for cell turnover and collagen building. As a beauty editor, I’ve heard dermatologists say they can tell instantly if a patient consistently uses retinol, especially in their 40s and beyond.

To get started, you can use an over-the-counter treatment or ask your dermatologist for a prescription-strength option tailored to your skin’s needs.

    Vitamin C for Sun Damage

Vitamin C doesn’t just brighten skin—it’s a powerful antioxidant that helps prevent free radical damage. Free radicals are what cause premature aging by breaking down the collagen and elastin your skin needs for repair. Vitamin C also works alongside your sunscreen to help prevent UV damage, so don’t skip it before you apply SPF.

Look for serums that pair vitamin C with other antioxidants like niacinamide, resveratrol, ferulic acid, and the increasingly buzzy azelaic acid.

    Peptides for Sun Damage

Peptides are everywhere right now. You might know them best from injectables, but they’re already showing up in some of the best high-performing skincare too. Peptides increase hydration, stimulate collagen production, and support your skin’s natural building blocks for a stronger barrier.

    Treatments for Sun Damage

If you want to go in-office to treat existing sun damage, Dr. Farhang recommends resurfacing treatments—including one underrated, affordable favorite:

    • Microneedling: Stimulates collagen with minimal downtime. “Very underrated,” says Dr. Farhang.
    • CO2 lasers: A buzzy longevity treatment that resurfaces skin and, per Dr. Farhang, has recently been shown to help with texture, lines, and crepey skin — and to actually decrease cellular skin aging.
    • Morpheus8: An energy-based device that tightens skin using radiofrequency.
    • Ultherapy: Tightens skin using ultrasound technology.
    • IPL: An energy-based device popular for addressing “reds and browns” — think broken blood vessels from sun damage or rosacea, and sun spots. One caveat: IPL may not be suitable for darker skin tones, so consult your derm before booking.

While in-office treatments are a great high-maintenance hack to keep your daily skincare routine low-maintenance, be sure to consult an expert so you know what treatments are actually worth it. And per Dr. Farhang, you can’t undo deep skin damage with in-office treatments alone.

“People are way better off staying consistent with smaller, non-surgical treatments from a derm than doing nothing and then jumping straight into a facelift,” she says. “That’s basically what I tell my patients daily.”
