We Asked AI to Name the 5 Best Menswear Brands of 2026. Claude and ChatGPT Agreed on Nothing

We independently evaluate all recommended products and services. Any products or services put forward appear in no particular order. if you click on links we provide, we may receive compensation.

Let me be honest with you. We expected this experiment to be a bit of fun and a lot of overlap. Ask two of the world’s most advanced AI models to name their five favourite menswear brands of 2026 so far, and surely you get the same mood board twice: the usual suspects, safely recycled.

What came back genuinely surprised us. Ten brands. Two completely different philosophies of getting dressed. And a number we did not see coming, which we will get to at the end. First, the ground rules.

    The Experiment

Both models were asked the identical question in a fresh conversation with no hints, no follow-ups and no editing: what are your top 5 menswear brands of 2026 so far, and why? What follows are their verbatim answers, lightly trimmed for length, with our commentary underneath each pick. One of these AIs answers like a menswear editor. The other answers like an engineer who wandered into fashion and started asking awkward questions. See if you can guess which is which before the verdict.

    CHATGPT’S FIVE

    Auralee

    Auralee menswear understated luxury
    View More On Auralee

“The master of understated luxury. Nobody does fabric, drape, and colour better right now. Every collection feels effortless without being boring.”

The Tokyo label is the fashion crowd’s worst-kept secret, and ChatGPT opening with it tells you exactly what kind of taste we are dealing with.

    Drake’s

    Drake's relaxed tailoring knitwear
    View More On Drake’s

“The brand that proves tailoring doesn’t have to feel formal. Relaxed silhouettes, incredible knitwear, and some of the best styling in the industry.”

Hard to argue. Drake’s has spent a decade making classic menswear feel like a pleasure rather than a dress code.

    Our Legacy

    Our Legacy Stockholm contemporary menswear
    View More On Our Legacy

“The benchmark for contemporary wardrobe building. Every season it delivers pieces that feel current without chasing trends.”

The Stockholm brand whose silhouettes half the industry is quietly designing in the shadow of. A consensus pick, and a correct one.

    Buck Mason

    Buck Mason elevated basics menswear
    View More On Buck Mason

“The king of elevated basics. While luxury brands compete for headlines, Buck Mason keeps refining the everyday essentials men actually wear.”

The first curveball: an unflashy American basics brand sitting among the fashion-literate picks, and the most wearable name on its list.

    LEMAIRE

    LEMAIRE Paris quiet luxury menswear
    View More On LEMAIRE

“Quiet confidence through exceptional design. Timeless clothing with beautiful proportions, rich textures and an aesthetic that feels relevant year after year.”

The Parisian house that made quiet the loudest statement in fashion. With Auralee and Our Legacy alongside it, ChatGPT has essentially recited the modern menswear canon.

    CLAUDE’S FIVE

    Uniqlo

    Uniqlo engineering basics menswear
    View More On Uniqlo

“Not glamorous, but I have real respect for what they do: engineering-grade basics that quietly outperform stuff costing five times more. The most correct brand in menswear even if it’s not the most exciting one.”

An AI opening its list with Uniqlo is the fashion equivalent of a sommelier recommending tap water, and the reasoning is annoyingly difficult to fault.

    Arc’teryx

    Arc'teryx technical outerwear
    View More On Arc’teryx

“Technical outerwear that accidentally became a status symbol without changing anything about how it’s made. I like when a brand’s cultural rise is a byproduct of genuine engineering obsession rather than the point.”

The most quietly profound sentence either AI produced, and a neat summary of why the bird logo is everywhere.

    Aimé Leon Dore

Aime Leon Dore New York prep streetwear
View More On Aimé Leon Dore

“Still the clearest expression of New York prep meets streetwear going. Teddy Santis’s nostalgia shouldn’t work as a coherent aesthetic but it does, consistently.”

The one moment the two lists nearly touch: a culture-first brand a menswear editor would happily endorse.

    Story Mfg.

Story Mfg hand dyed natural menswear
    View More On Story Mfg.

“Small, slightly eccentric, hand-dyed, unbothered by trend cycles. I find myself drawn to brands that feel like they’d exist even with zero customers.”

The most human sentence in the entire experiment, about the least algorithmic brand in Britain. Make of that what you will.

    Massimo Dutti

Massimo Dutti affordable quiet luxury menswear
    View More On Massimo Dutti

“The most slept-on brand for looks expensive, isn’t. Genuinely closing the gap between fast fashion and quiet luxury better than almost anyone at that price point.”

And there it is: the pick no fashion editor would dare open with, delivered without a flicker of embarrassment.

    The Verdict

Here is the number we promised: zero. Out of ten possible picks, the two most advanced AI models on the planet agreed on not one single brand. Not Auralee. Not Our Legacy. Nothing.

And the split is stranger than disagreement, because both lists are good. ChatGPT curated the perfect menswear insider’s answer: fabric, drape, heritage, the canon. Claude ignored the canon almost entirely and optimised for value, engineering and character, the answer of something that read every review and none of the lookbooks. One AI told you what the industry loves. The other told you what actually works.

Which one dresses better? That, genuinely, is your call, and we would love to hear it. Our take: the perfect wardrobe is probably both lists shaken together, canon on top, engineering underneath.

The machines have spoken. They just refused to speak in unison, and menswear is more interesting for it.
