Comedian Marlon Wayans Breaks His Silence After ‘Try That In A Small Town’ Joke Backlash

The comedian Marlon Wayans is speaking out against cancel culture after he received backlash for a joke that he made referencing the country music star Jason Aldean’s anti-woke anthem “Try That In A Small Town.”

Actor and comedian Marlon Wayans sounded off on cancel culture after facing social media backlash over a sarcastic comment that referenced the Jason Aldean song, “Try That In a Small Town.”

Wayans References ‘Try That In A Small Town’

Fox News reported that it all started when Wayans took to Instagram to mock the recent Alabama riverboat brawl that quickly went viral.

“How ’bout we not ‘Try that in a small town’….” Wayans wrote. “Sh—t silly bro… let’s all just be love not war.”

Wayans was quickly hit with backlash from leftwing social media users who thought that he was endorsing the message of the anti-woke song. The comedian vehemently denied this, slamming Aldean’s song as being “divisive” and claiming that it promoted the “kind of mentality that fuels…racism, bigotry and some violence.”

“Let’s stop doing stupid songs like that, which promote negativity toward Black people,” he said. “That s—t ain’t cool.”

Wayans further defended himself on the sports analyst Jalen Rose’s “Renaissance Man” podcast, where he also slammed cancel culture.

“I think social media messed up socializing and we’ve got to get back to laughing and finding reasons to laugh and stop being so damn sensitive,” Wayans said. “All we’re doing is filling our airwaves, filling our kids with fear and hate — there’s no laughter and love. The only thing that’s going to bring us together is humor.”

“Most of the people on social media with these [negative] opinions aren’t even real people, they’re bots from other countries,” he later added. “They’re trying to strip us of the very thing that makes our country special: the freedom of speech.”

“We’re so stupid that we allow this to happen. Sooner or later, they’re going to take away the First Amendment. We’re all going to have to think alike,” Wayans concluded. “People are going to get canceled. ‘You can’t think like this.’ What kind of society do we live in?”

Marlon Wayans says movies like ‘White Chicks’ are still ‘needed’ today despite cancel culture:

Backlash Against ‘Try That In A Small Town’

Liberals have outrageously claimed that “Try That In A Small Town” is a “pro-lynching” song, and they’ve taken issue with the fact that its music video dares to portray the violence and chaos of the Black Lives Matter riots of 2020.

The backlash got to be so great earlier this month that Country Music Television (CMT) pulled the “Try That In A Small Town” music video from its rotation.

Aldean immediately fired back by defending his song, saying that it is not racist at all.

“In the past 24 hours I have been accused of releasing a pro-lynching song (a song that has been out since May) and was subject to the comparison that I (direct quote) was not too pleased with the nationwide BLM protests,” he said. “These references are not only meritless, but dangerous.”

“There is not a single lyric in the song that references race or points to it- and there isn’t a single video clip that isn’t real news footage -and while I can try and respect others to have their own interpretation of a song with music- this one goes too far,” Aldean continued. “‘Try That In A Small Town,’ for me, refers to the feeling of a community that I had growing up, where we took care of our neighbors, regardless of differences of background or belief. Because they were our neighbors, and that was above any differences.”

Aldean has long been targeted by the left because he is one of the few openly conservative celebrities out there, publicly supporting Donald Trump in both the 2016 and the 2020 presidential elections.

While we agree with Wayans’ takedown of cancel culture, it’s unfortunate that he felt the need to distance himself from “Try That In A Small Town” by slamming the song. In the end, he might want to give “Try That In A Small Town” another listen, because the lyrics of the anti-woke anthem are really not “divisive” at all!
