McConnell Assigns Cornyn To ‘Negotiate’ (Cave To) Democrats On Gun Legislation

McConnell Assigns Cornyn To ‘Negotiate’ (Cave To) Democrats On Gun Legislation

While the nation looks for answers on how to stop mass shootings like the ones in Buffalo, New York and Uvalde, Texas, average rank-and-file conservatives will be looking for answers as to how badly House and Senate Republicans will cave to Democrats over any upcoming proposed gun legislation.

On Thursday, Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell tasked John Cornyn, the #2 Republican in the Senate, to “negotiate” with Democrats on gun control.

On Wednesday, Chuck Schumer BLOCKED school safety bill – says ‘gun legislation’ is the answer.

The Luke and Alex School Safety Act was named after Parkland victims, & Republicans have been trying to pass it for years. https://t.co/v32TZyR1d3

    Hindering Or Helping Democrats?

According to The Hill, McConnell claimed to limit Cornyn to topics “directly related” to the Uvalde shooting.

“I met with Sen. Cornyn this morning. I’ve encouraged him to talk to Sen. Sinema, Sen. Murphy and others who are interested in trying to get an outcome that’s directly related to the problem. And so I am hopeful that we could come up with a bipartisan solution that’s directly related to the facts of this awful massacre. What I’ve asked Sen. Cornyn to do is to meet with the Democrats who are interested in getting a bipartisan solution and come up with a proposal, if possible, that’s crafted to meet this particular problem,”

But The Hill reveals the game – that Cornyn is really trying to “provide cover” so that enough Republicans will support so-called “red flag” legislation that allows the government to confiscate weapons from people who have not been convicted – or even charged – with a crime.

    Democrats Dismiss School Safety Bill

On Wednesday, the day after the Texas shooting, Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) asked for the Luke and Alex School Safety Act to be passed in the Senate by unanimous consent.

The bill, named after two of the Parkland school shooting victims, requires the Department of Homeland Security to create a “Federal Clearinghouse on School Safety Best Practices.”

It would also require DHS to “collect clearinghouse data analytics, user feedback on the implementation of best practices and recommendations identified by the clearinghouse, and any evaluations conducted on these best practices and recommendations.”

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer blocked any action on the bill tweeting that it “could see more guns in schools.”

GOP Sen. Johnson just tried for a bill that could see more guns in schools—I blocked it.

The truth: There were officers at the school in Texas. The shooter got past them.

We need real solutions—We will vote on gun legislation starting with the Domestic Terrorism Prevention Act.

    — Chuck Schumer (@SenSchumer) May 25, 2022

Schumer then attempted to bribe GOP Senators, saying that the School Safety bill would be considered if the GOP would debate the domestic terrorism bill. True to form, the best Republicans could do was to come up with some name-calling tweets.

Not surprising that the Democrat leader would lie about the bill he blocked that parents of Parkland victims have been trying to pass for years.

Dems aren’t looking for solutions, they want wedge issues that they hope will keep them in power. Sick. https://t.co/f4zbNb03ey

    — Senator Ron Johnson (@SenRonJohnson) May 26, 2022

Florida Senator Rick Scott also chimed in, but also did nothing to attempt to advance the GOP agenda.

This was a bill I worked on with the parents of Parkland victims. It’s named after them. You’re a liar and a hack. https://t.co/WKFMLTjT4x

    Still More Squishiness

While Republicans attempt to “negotiate” with Democrats, which usually means caving in to whatever Democrats want, even more acts of weakness are occurring outside of Washington.

On Friday, the annual National Rifle Association’s (NRA) convention gets under way in Houston. Sen. Ted Cruz and former president Donald Trump are scheduled to speak.

Other Republicans are dropping out. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott had been scheduled to appear but will now go to Uvalde instead, and speak to the convention via pre-recorded message.

Sen. Cornyn and Rep. Dan Crenshaw were also slated to attend, but both came down with a case of sudden “scheduling conflicts.”

Thursday afternoon, a group of five Democrat and three Republican Senators, including Lindsey Graham, Pat Toomey, and Bill Cassidy met in the basement of the Capitol, curious all on its own, to start laying out a framework that would, you guessed it, put emphasis on expanded background checks and red flag legislation.
