Axon, a company specializing in public safety technologies, announced that it’s developing a non-lethal, remotely-operated taser drone system. This would consist of accelerating detection and improving real-time situational awareness of active shooter events, while also enhancing first responder effectiveness through VR training. Once perfected, one would be able to deploy remotely operated non-lethal drones capable of incapacitating an active shooter in under 60-seconds.
The taser payload can be deployed on a small drone or robot, thanks to a collaboration with DroneSense. These two companies will develop the targeting algorithms required to assist operators in properly and safely aiming the device. However, all final use-of-force decisions will be made by an authenticated and authorized human operator. A functional proof of concept is set to be unveiled in 2023 with a full launch ready by 2024. Before that time, law enforcement can make use of BolaWrap to restrain people in a non-lethal manner.
