NASA / ESA’s Hubble Space Telescope captured the glimmering globular cluster Terzan 2 located in the Scorpio constellation. Globular clusters are basically stable, tightly gravitational-bound clusters of millions of stars found in a wide variety of galaxies. Due to the intense gravitational attraction between the closely packed stars, globular clusters have a regular, spherical shape.
Hubble utilizes both its Advanced Camera for Surveys and its Wide Field Camera 3 for this observation. Despite just having a single primary mirror, Hubble’s design enables multiple instruments to be used to inspect astronomical objects. This means that light from distant astronomical objects enters Hubble and is then collected by the telescope’s 2.4-meter primary mirror before being reflected off the secondary mirror, where smaller mirrors direct that light into the individual instruments. Even more fascinating is the fact that researchers discovered the universe mirrors a human brain structurally.
