MBARI Uses Submersible to Observe Deep-Sea Squid Mom Carrying Eggs to Keep Them Safe

MBARI Uses Submersible to Observe Deep-Sea Squid Mom Carrying Eggs to Keep Them Safe
MBARI (Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute) researchers used a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) to observe a deep-sea squid mom carrying hundreds of eggs to keep them safe from predators. It was spotted at a depth of 4,560-feet at more than 56-miles offshore from MBARI’s facilities in Moss Landing, California.

This breathtaking ultra high-definition resolution 4K video from the remotely operated vehicle (ROV) Doc Ricketts enbables researchers to examine the oceanic parent in amazing detail. Octopuses are well known for protecting their eggs, but just three species of squid are known to stay with their young. They basically reproduce by depositing egg cases on the seafloor or releasing eggs in a gelatinous mass capable of drifting in open water. Believe it or not, this transformable SQUID drone that can be shot out of a cannon also exists.

    • Care-free Creation – Weighing less than 249 g, Mini 3 Pro doesn’t require registration in most countries and regions. The foldable and compact design also makes it easy to carry on any adventure.
    • Seriously Pro Shots – Capture your world in remarkable detail with 4K/60fps video and 48MP photos. The advanced camera system supports dual native ISO and f/1.7 aperture for high-quality imagery, night and day.
    • Perfect Portraits in a Tap – The redesigned DJI Mini 3 Pro offers True Vertical Shooting for portrait shots, ideal for social media. The gimbal rotates 90, so you don’t have to compromise image quality.
    • Sweet Air Time – Enjoy an extended flight time of up to 34 minutes and capture and explore more of your surroundings.
    • Fly with Confidence – DJI Mini 3 Pro features tri-directional obstacle sensing and APAS 4.0, bringing unrivaled safety to the Mini series.

The deep ocean is challenging to study and we only get brief glimpses into the behaviors of deep-sea animals. MBARI’s archive of thousands of hours of underwater video has helped illuminate life in the largest living space on Earth,” said the researchers.
