‘Y&R’ Head Writer Previews Shemar Moore’s Return As Malcolm

Shemar Moore has had a prolific career as an actor, but he got his start on The Young and the Restless as Malcolm Winters. Recently, it’s been announced that he’s making his return to the soap. Since then, one figure behind the scenes has opened up about what fans can expect from Moore.

Shemar Moore Joined The Young & The Restless Back In 1994

As an actor, Moore has had many notable roles throughout his career. He played Derek Morgan on Criminal Minds from 2005 to 2017. Later, he had the lead role of Sergeant Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson on S.W.A.T. from 2017 to 2025.

However, one of his breakout roles was playing Malcolm Winters on The Young and the Restless. First appearing in the role in 1994, he has appeared as the character off and on over the ensuing years.

Recently, it’s been announced that Moore would be making his return to Genoa City just as the summer months roll in. He will appear on the daytime drama this upcoming Monday, June 8, and Tuesday, June 9.

Recently, head writer Josh Griffith spoke with Soap Opera Digest about what fans can expect for the character’s homecoming. Reportedly, Malcolm is in good health thanks to a bone marrow donation from former son-in-law Cane. Griffith shared, “Malcolm has got to come back because he’s got some thanks to give to Cane. And now that he’s out of the woods and he’s not preoccupied with his own medical condition, he needs to make a connection with his new son.”

This was in reference to Holden, his surprise son with Stephanie, played by Vivica A. Fox, who also made her recent return to the soap. He’ll also be spending time with his daughter, Lily, during his return.

Head Writer Josh Griffith Also Weighed In On Future Appearances From Moore

Griffith admitted that the idea of Holden being Malcom’s son wasn’t always in the cards. He explained that it “literally came to me watching a scene between Holden and Lily and watching Christel with Nathan. I wasn’t seeing it romantically, because I’m fixated on Lily and Cane, but I thought, ‘We need to bring him more into the world [of Genoa City]. We need to look at how to do that. And then I thought, ‘Wait a second, I want him to be Malcolm’s son!’”

“When I looked back into history, I thought, ‘Well, if you look at the timing, and he had this relationship with the character that Vivica Fox played, and I said, ‘I wonder if we can get Vivica back, as well.’ And then it just all fell together.”

Griffith noted that the idea wasn’t set in stone either, being reliant on whether or not Moore and Fox would agree to appear on the show. That said, he added, “I was confident. It just seemed like it was the perfect story, and so it had to work!”

The writer also shared that he’d be all for more appearances from Shemar in Genoa City. He mused, “I mean, if he wants to come back full-time, it’s okay with me!”

What is your reaction to Josh Griffith’s recent share? Have you been following this story? Are you keeping up with The Young and the Restless? Make sure you come back to TV Shows Ace for all the latest TV and celebrity news.
