Why Quentin Tarantino Scrapped 10th Movie The Movie Critic

Quentin Tarantino has never been all that reclusive or mysterious as a filmmaker, and so it’s hardly a surprise that following his decision to shut down his planned 10th film, The Movie Critic, he’s opened up about his reason for doing so. As he told the Church of Tarantino podcast, “Every Tarantino title promises so much, except ‘The Movie Critic.’ Who wants to see a movie about a fucking movie critic?”

Whether or not Tarantino’s right about that (as a movie critic, I must say I see his point), it does speak to the self-imposed pressure he faces when it comes to his 10th movie, which he has long declared would be his final one. “I was excited about the script, but once we hit pre-production, I wasn’t excited about dramatizing what I wrote,” he said on the podcast. A problem perhaps due to his initial inspiration, which was to “take the most boring profession in the world and make it interesting.”

Tarantino also revealed that The Movie Critic began originally as an eight-episode TV series, before he reworked it as a feature film, and that rumors of it involving an appearance from Brad Pitt’s Cliff Booth were “bullshit.” However, Cliff will be returning to the screen soon, as production is now underway on The Adventures of Cliff Booth, the Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood sequel written by Tarantino and directed by David Fincher for Netflix.

As for Tarantino’s allegedly final film, what it will be remains up in the air. But it’s not impossible to imagine The Movie Critic finding its way to fans via another medium: Perhaps, like Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, the filmmaker and author could novelize it.
