Harry Potter’s Confirmed 2026 Release Is Officially Keeping A Franchise Tradition Alive

The Harry Potter TV series has a confirmed release date for 2026, and through it, it’s keeping a franchise tradition alive. Over a decade after the Harry Potter movie series ended, the wizarding world continues to be quite popular, and after the failure of the Fantastic Beasts movie series, this universe is going back to basics, now on TV.

The story of Harry Potter is now getting a TV remake, with the first season covering the first novel, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. The plan for the Harry Potter TV series is to span a decade and to be a faithful adaptation of the books, so it’s expected to be a lot more detailed and developed than the movies.

The first teaser for the Harry Potter TV show has given a brief taste of its tone, style, and closeness to the source material, as well as a release date that continues one of the franchise’s best traditions.

HBO’s Harry Potter Show Releasing Christmas 2026 Follows A Fun Franchise Tradition

As shown in the teaser, the first season of the Harry Potter TV show will cover not only Harry’s (Dominic McLaughlin) discovery of his magical abilities, his parents’ past, and his acceptance and arrival at Hogwarts, but will also go deeper into his life at the Dursleys’ house and how it has affected him.

The teaser also shows a bit of what awaits Harry at Hogwarts – from meeting his best friends Ron (Alastair Stout) and Hermione (Arabella Stanton) to the Sorting Ceremony and Harry’s first Quidditch game –, and ends with the most awaited announcement about the show: its release date.

The Harry Potter TV show will be released on HBO on Christmas 2026, keeping the movies’ tradition alive of arriving right on time for the holiday season. All Harry Potter movies, except Prisoner of Azkaban, Order of the Phoenix, Half-Blood Prince, and Deathly Hallows – Part 2, were released in November, with these arriving in May, June, and July.

This release plan was key to the Harry Potter movies becoming heavily associated with the holiday season, with many fans and networks doing Harry Potter movie marathons in November and December to keep the tradition alive after all these years.

Why Many Consider Harry Potter To Be Christmas Movies

The Harry Potter movies aren’t Christmas ones, and yet, as mentioned above, they are now associated with the holiday season. This is, in large part, thanks to the books having Christmas scenes, either at Hogwarts or wherever the characters are at the moment, and some of these were taken to the big screen.

Some movies covered Christmas in very discreet ways, while others showed how Hogwarts celebrates this holiday, most notably Philosopher’s Stone, where Harry gets a knitted sweater from the Weasleys and the invisibility cloak. This, along with the movies coming out on time for the holiday season, has made the Harry Potter saga a group of honorary Christmas movies.

The Harry Potter fanbase has kept this association and tradition alive through the years, with holiday viewings, marathons, and gatherings around Christmas, and various networks have also had their own Harry Potter Christmas marathons. On top of that, the magic atmosphere of the Harry Potter movies is fitting with Christmas, even though it gets progressively darker.

Harry Potter’s Confirmed 2026 Release Makes One Franchise Anniversary Even Bigger

On top of the Harry Potter TV series continuing the movies’ holiday release tradition, it will arrive right on time for a big franchise anniversary. The Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone movie was released in November 2001, so this year marks the 25th anniversary of the beginning of the movie series.

The Harry Potter TV show, then, is not only keeping the franchise’s holiday tradition alive (and being a Christmas treat for fans), but it will also be a heartwarming way of celebrating the 25th anniversary of the release of the first movie. The Harry Potter TV show seems to be on the path to success so far, and its future is looking bright.
