Masters of the Universe Revelation Sequel Series Confirmed For Netflix

Kevin Smith is continuing his He-Man story, as Masters of the Universe: Revelation will get a follow-up titled Masters of the Universe: Revolution.

Masters of the Universe: Revelation from filmmaker Kevin Smith is getting a continuation on Netflix. Announced in December 2019, Masters of the Universe: Revelation was designed as a spiritual sequel to the original He-Man and the Masters of the Universe series that aired from 1983 to 1985. Netflix split Masters of the Universe: Revelation into two parts, with part one premiering on July 23, 2021, and part two premiering on November 23, 2021, just in time for the Thanksgiving weekend.

The series generated mixed responses, with critics and general audiences seeming to like the series. However, there were some viewers who took issue with the series and even resorted to review bombing Revelation on Rotten Tomatoes shortly after part 1 premiered. Masters of the Universe: Revelation ended its story on a cliffhanger, with the villainous Skeletor being assimilated by the Motherboard. It was then revealed that Motherboard had the insignia of the Horde, the main villains from the She-Ra cartoon series that was a spin-off of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. That seemed to set the stage for a season 2, though it is instead taking a slightly different form.

Amid Netflix’s Geeked Week event, Smith took to social media to announce that Masters of the Universe: Revelation is receiving a sequel series, titled Masters of the Universe: Revolution. Deadline confirmed more details about Revolution, which is described as a standalone story that follows the events of Masters of the Universe: Revelation. It will bring the focus back to the He-Man vs. Skeletor battle “like you’ve never seen them before.” Currently, no premiere date or cast has been announced.

Since the news that Netflix had lost subscribers for the first time in ten years, the streamer has made multiple headlines over the past few months trying to repair its image, while also reassessing their creative decisions. Shows like The Baby-Sitter’s Club and Space Force were canceled, while many unmade animated series including Bone were shelved. Other in-development projects got the plug pulled on them as well. Netflix greenlighting another He-Man project from Smith shows that the streamer found Masters of the Universe: Revelation to be a success, and one they want to invest money into making more of.

Netflix is heavily invested in the Masters of the Universe brand. Alongside the upcoming Masters of the Universe: Revolution, the streamer also has the CGI animated He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, a family-friendly series that premiered two months after Masters of the Universe: Revelation. In 2022, Netflix also acquired the film rights to the live-action Masters of the Universe reboot film with Kyle Allen set to play He-Man. The Lost City directors Aaron and Adam Nee are set to helm the picture. Masters of the Universe: Revolution looks to be part of Netflix’s long-term plan to grow the franchise out as one of their signature brands, and Smith will continue to be a key creative voice within that brand.
