Japan-based housing developer Ichijo Komuten builds floating homes that can withstand major floods. How do they work? When these flood-resistant homes are surrounded by water, a floating mechanism allows it to float upwards, leaving the ground. Since all of the windows and openings are completely sealed, no water makes it inside the house.
Multiple heavy duty iron rods are connected to industrial-grade cables that prevent the home from just washing away, and when the water recedes, the structure gently returns to the ground and back to its original location. The plumbing utilizes special valves that prevent it from filling with flood water, while electrical equipment is all located near the roof to prevent any damage. New home buyers can also opt to have this system installed, but pricing has not yet been confirmed. Once place you probably will never find these homes is Cameron Airpark Estates where airplanes are parked in front of most of the homes.
