PlayStation is at a crossroads in more ways than one. The backlash over the eventual phasing out of physical discs has only fueled the fire lately, and the company is also poised to stop delivering first-party games on PC.
It’s a tough time for many PlayStation fans, but the company shows no signs of slowing down, especially as we head into 2027, when a few exclusives have already been announced. But you won’t have to wait until next year to get in on the action.
Thanks to a new PlayStation Blog update, we know Sony has at least something up its sleeve for the upcoming holiday season: an update on one of its few exclusives this year.
Saros just got its biggest update yet, and PlayStation is sharing the details. Here’s the full announcement from Abebe Tinari, Saros: Zenith Design Lead:
“Starting today (October 19) the Saros: Zenith update is available to all Saros owners for no additional charge. We had two main goals for this update: add replayability for existing players who had already plumbed the depth of Carcosa, and make the game more accessible so Saros even more people can discover the addictive, explosive, exhilarating bullet ballet gameplay that made Saros one of the highest rated action games of 2026.”
The core feature behind the update is “Slow Speed Mode,” which lets you slow the game down, giving you more time to react. However, enemies are attacking at the same rate as you, so you’ll need to dodge accordingly. Game speeds are variable, and there’s a toggle for allowing players to enable it when combat begins.
To give you a bit of background, this is Housemarque’s philosophy on difficulty, which should resonate with a lot of genre fans: “At Housemarque, a feeling we chase with our designs is the satisfaction that comes from facing down a difficult challenge, then overcoming it. Because of this, we are always wary about adjusting difficulty by toning down the parts of the game that create these interesting challenges: i.e. the spectacular attacks coming at you from our enemies. Although we realize our games can look intimidating at first, we didn’t want to compromise the combat system of Saros by reducing the projectiles that put the ‘bullet’ in “bullet ballet.”
Ultimately, it’s a good compromise and an optional mode that might help many lapsed players finish the game. In addition to slow motion, there’s also an auto-fire mode, which lets you fire automatically when aiming at enemies. You can use these options together.
In terms of gameplay, the Carcosan Modifier mechanic has been greatly expanded, and you can toggle the game’s difficulty on various sliders. The game includes at least 10 Protection Modifiers, 10 Trial Modifiers, and New Game+ in the form of “Eclipse Layers.” In a neat twist, turning on enough modifiers will make your aesthetic golden.
Finally, if you haven’t gotten enough of Saros yet, there’s a new Overlord Rush mode, where you need to take down the various core bosses from the campaign. Think of it like a boss rush mode, but with global leaderboards.
