The 25 Best Western Shows Of All Time, Ranked

The 25 Best Western Shows Of All Time, Ranked

Western television has changed a lot over the years, but the genre has never really gone away. Early shows were defined by cowboys, outlaws, frontier towns, and wide-open landscapes. Later series found new ways to explore those same ideas through crime dramas, prestige storytelling, revisionist history, and even supernatural twists.

The best Westerns are about much more than gunfights and horseback chases; they explore justice, survival, loyalty, violence, family, and the uneasy line between civilization and lawlessness. Some shows embrace classic frontier stories, while others question the myths earlier Westerns helped create.

Ranking the best Western shows of all time means looking beyond popularity. Longevity and cultural impact matter, especially for the series that helped shape the genre. Strong writing, performances, ambition, and a fresh approach to familiar Western themes matter just as much. From early classics to modern dramas, these series prove there is no single way to tell a great story about the frontier or the people still living by its code.

    Wynonna Earp (2016-2021)

    4 Seasons

Wynonna Earp is about as far from your classic Western as you can get, and that’s what makes it such a standout in the genre. If you haven’t checked it out, the Syfy series follows Wyatt Earp’s descendant as she takes on supernatural threats tied to her family’s legacy. Think Western mythology meets horror, fantasy, and a healthy dose of humor.

Wynonna Earp is proof that Westerns don’t have to be stuck in the past. Sure, the supernatural twists take things in some wild directions, but at its core, this show is still all about legacy, lawlessness, and one woman’s fight to protect her home.

    Lawmen: Bass Reeves (2023)

    1 Season

Bass Reeves (David Oyelowo) leaning on a fence in Lawmen: Bass Reeves.

The Western genre spent decades overlooking some of the real people who helped shape the American frontier. Lawmen: Bass Reeves helps correct that by putting the legendary lawman at the center of his own story, with David Oyelowo delivering a commanding performance as Reeves.

15 Best Western TV Characters Of All Time

While everyone is familiar with the greatest Western movie characters, some of the genre’s best creations down the years have been for TV shows.

With just eight episodes, the show doesn’t have the sprawling run of some Western classics, but what it does have is a sharp focus on Reeves’ career, his family, and his complicated relationship with the law. That perspective is something TV Westerns have been missing, and it’s exactly why this show matters.

    23

    The English (2022)

    1 Season

Emily Blunt as Lady Cornelia Locke riding a horse in Prime Video's The English (2022)
Emily Blunt as Lady Cornelia Locke riding a horse in Prime Video’s The English (2022)

The English takes all the familiar Western ingredients and spins them into something much darker and more personal. Emily Blunt leads as Cornelia Locke, an Englishwoman out for revenge after her son’s death, and Chaske Spencer is fantastic as Eli Whipp, a former Pawnee cavalry scout. Watching their stories intertwine is half the fun.

At only six episodes, the miniseries lacks the longevity of the shows ranked above it. What it does have is striking storytelling and two compelling central performances. Its willingness to confront violence and the uglier realities behind the mythology of the American West gives the familiar genre a distinctive perspective.

    22

    1923 (2022-2025)

    2 Seasons

Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren look out over the landscape in 1923

Once Yellowstone became a TV phenomenon, it was only a matter of time before we got prequels diving into the Dutton family’s past. 1923 is the most ambitious of the bunch, following Jacob and Cara Dutton as they deal with Prohibition, economic struggles, western expansion, and all the threats facing their Montana ranch. Having Hollywood titans Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren lead the show doesn’t hurt either.

1923 nails that big, classic Western feel while still delivering the serialized drama we’ve come to expect from modern prestige TV. Sure, it’s part of the Yellowstone universe, but thanks to its standout characters and rich historical setting, it more than holds its own.

    21

    Wanted: Dead or Alive (1958-1961)

    3 Seasons

Steve McQueen as Josh Randall pointing a rifle in Wanted Dead or Alive
Steve McQueen as Josh Randall pointing a rifle in Wanted Dead or Alive

Before Steve McQueen became one of Hollywood’s biggest movie stars, he played bounty hunter Josh Randall on Wanted: Dead or Alive. The CBS Western ran for three seasons from 1958 to 1961 and gave McQueen the role that helped establish his screen persona.

Josh Randall set this show apart from the sea of Westerns on TV at the time. Instead of playing a straitlaced sheriff or a classic gunslinger, McQueen’s bounty hunter worked in the gray areas of frontier justice. Wanted: Dead or Alive ended up being a key stepping stone for McQueen and paved the way for the more complex Western heroes that came after.

    20

The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr. (1993–1994)

    1 Season

Julius Carry and Bruce Campbell in The Adventures of Brisco County Jr

The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr. only lasted a single season, but there’s a reason fans still talk about it. Bruce Campbell brings his signature charm to Brisco, a Harvard-educated bounty hunter out to catch his father’s killer. What really sets this show apart is how it mashes up Western adventure, comedy, and a dash of sci-fi, all while keeping things intentionally light and fun.

That mix made Brisco County feel totally different from the usual Westerns of the early ‘90s. Sure, it played with classic tropes, but it was never afraid to twist them into something new. If it had stuck around longer, it might have landed even higher on this list, but even with just one season, Brisco County stands out as one of TV’s most creative spins on the Western.

    19

    The High Chaparral (1967–1971)

    4 Seasons

Men leaning on a fence in The High Chaparral

From David Dortort, the mind behind Bonanza, The High Chaparral centers on the Cannon family’s fight to build a ranch in the Arizona Territory. Over four seasons, the show dives into all the classic Western drama — frontier dangers, family feuds, and the complicated mix of cultures that defined the region.

What really sets The High Chaparral apart is how it pushes the boundaries of the typical Western family drama. Instead of sidelining Mexican and Native American characters, the show brings them right into the heart of the story. That choice gave the series a unique identity, especially at a time when Westerns were everywhere on TV.

    18

    The Big Valley (1965–1969)

    4 Seasons

Barbara Stanwyck and the rest of the cast of The Big Valley

The Big Valley is all about the Barkleys, a wealthy family running a massive California ranch. Barbara Stanwyck absolutely owns the role of Victoria Barkley, the tough-as-nails matriarch who keeps her family together through land grabs, outlaws, and all the usual frontier chaos. With Lee Majors, Richard Long, Peter Breck, and Linda Evans filling out the family, there’s never a dull moment.

Family drama is where The Big Valley really shines. The Barkleys aren’t just a group of characters — they’re a complicated, messy family whose relationships fuel the show’s best moments. Stanwyck’s powerhouse performance anchors everything, making this series stand out from the crowd of ranch Westerns that filled the airwaves back then.

    17

    The Wild Wild West (1965–1969)

    4 Seasons

The Wild Wild West was never afraid to get weird. This show follows Secret Service agents James West and Artemus Gordon as they tackle all sorts of wild threats in the post-Civil War West. Think of it as James Bond on horseback — creator Michael Garrison literally pitched it that way — mixing Western action with spy gadgets and a healthy dose of sci-fi.

8 Classic Western TV Shows Nobody Remembers

The neo-Western revival has brought attention to a genre that had fallen out of favor, but some forgotten classic Westerns should also be remembered.

That mashup is exactly what made The Wild Wild West so memorable. With over-the-top gadgets, bizarre villains, and plots that just kept getting stranger, this series was nothing like your typical Western. Though it’s been somewhat lost to time, its commitment to being different is why diehard fans still recognize it instantly, even decades later.

    16

    The Virginian (1962–1971)

    9 Seasons

James Drury as the Virginian in The Virginian
James Drury as the Virginian in The Virginian

The Virginian is a true marathon of a Western, running for nine seasons and racking up 249 episodes. James Drury leads the way as the no-nonsense foreman at Shiloh Ranch in Wyoming Territory. Fun fact for TV buffs: this was the first Western series to go to a 90-minute format.

That extra-long runtime meant The Virginian could really dig into its characters in a way most Westerns couldn’t. The supporting cast came and went, but Drury was always the anchor. Thanks to its long run and ambitious format, The Virginian helped bridge the gap between the old-school Westerns and the bigger, more complex TV dramas that came later.
