Uncoupled Season 2 Updates: Story, Cast & News

Uncoupled season 1’s closing moments set the stage for another season of Michael’s complex romantic endeavors – here’s what we know about season 2.

Warning: contains SPOILERS for Uncoupled season 1.

New rom-com Uncoupled has been released on Netflix to a positive reception – and here is everything we know about the prospects of a season 2. Starring How I Met Your Mother‘s Neil Patrick Harris, the eight-part series has been dubbed the “perfect form” of escapist TV. Neil Patrick Harris’ on-screen charm and wit are enough to keep many viewers hooked throughout its runtime, and Uncoupled further elevates the star’s pitch-perfect comedic timing by weaving a heartwarming arc into his character’s overarching storyline.

    SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Uncoupled follows Michael, whose partner of 17 years, Colin (Tuc Watkins), unexpectedly breaks up with him. As a 40-something, Michael finds it hard to digest his sudden singlehood and struggles to navigate the unfamiliar world of dating. Instead of finding absolute answers to his dating dilemmas, Michael only further complicates his life with the string of romantic affairs and potential relationships that arrive.

Uncoupled season 1’s ending makes things even worse for Neil Patrick Harris‘ Michael when Colin shows up at his door and confesses that he made a mistake. Now that Michael has gone through somewhat of a rite of passage through his dating endeavors, it is yet to be known whether he will welcome Colin with open arms. With this nagging question in its closing moments, Uncoupled season 1 makes it hard not to wonder what season 2 could have in store. Here’s everything we know about Uncoupled season 2, including its renewal status, returning cast, and potential release date.

    Uncoupled Season 2 Renewal

So far, Netflix has made no official announcements regarding Uncoupled season 2. However, considering how the show is receiving positive reviews from both critics and viewers, the odds of its renewal seem to be in its favor. Even Uncoupled season 1’s open-ended climax suggests that there is still a little more room for Michael’s New York dating adventures.

How Uncoupled’s Ending Sets Up Season 2

Neil Patrick Harris as Michael Lawson in episode 103 of Uncoupled.

After staying apart for the entire season, Colin returns home to Neil Patrick Harris’ Michael after realizing his decision to leave him was wrong. Michael, too, goes through a transformation and learns from his past mistakes while wishing for Colin’s happiness even after their tragic breakup. However, the ending also seems to indicate that their dynamic may never be the same again. Colin has a change of heart, but he could feel bound by Micheal’s monotonous routines down the line.

In this way, Uncoupled season 2 could explore how Michael’s newly-discovered openness to change will improve — or further complicate — their relationship. Furthermore, Michael’s commitment to Colin never dwindles throughout the season, but staying single has been a cathartic experience for him and might make him second guess Colin’s loyalty. Uncoupled season 2 could use this as a cue and portray how Michael will try getting things right the second time while hoping Colin will stay.

Uncoupled season 1’s cliffhanger almost guarantees the return of Neil Patrick Harris as Michael and Tuc Watkins as Colin in season 2. Other than the central couple, Emerson Brooks, Brooks Ashmanskas, and Tisha Campbell will likely reprise their roles as Michael’s best buds, while Marcia Gay Harden will add another layer or two of drama to the show’s plot. Depending on Uncoupled season 2’s developments, new cast members may also be added to the mix.

Uncoupled Season 2 Predicted Release Date

Uncoupled season 2 has not been officially greenlit by Netflix. However, since Netflix confirmed Heartstopper‘s season 2 a month after its release, Uncoupled‘s fate should be revealed by the end of September 2022. Considering Netflix’s release schedule with other similar rom-com shows, Uncoupled season 2 will likely release sometime towards the end of 2023 if its filming commences soon.
