GMC vs. Chevrolet: What Separates the Two Brands?

There’s no denying that GMC and Chevrolet are iconic brands. They’ve both seen a great deal of success over the years. If you’re looking into getting a new vehicle this year, though, you may be having a tough time choosing between them.

You can visit Salt Lake City Chevrolet dealerships if you live in that part of the country and you’re targeting the Chevy brand. You can also find some GMC models in the area that are priced to own.

If you’re on the fence about these brands, this article should help you select which will work best for you.

GMC and Chevrolet Are Both Made by GM

Some people are unaware that GMC and Chevrolet are made by the same manufacturer. That is GM, which stands for General Motors. General Motors has a history in this country going back many decades.

Because of this, you will likely notice more similarities between Chevy and GMC than you will significant differences. However, GMC is thought of as a more premium or high-end version of Chevy. Many of their vehicles are almost identical, but the higher price point you see with the GMC equivalents is because of more impressive features and trim packages available to consumers.

You Get a Bigger Selection with Chevrolet

If you’re trying to choose between these two GM brands, the biggest difference you will notice is in the sheer number of vehicles that you can get with Chevy. You will not see such a wide selection of options with GMC.

With Chevy, there is a whole line of cars that is not available with GMC. If you go with GMC, you’re basically looking at only three kinds of vehicles. Those are crossovers, pickups, and vans.

What if You Want a Pickup Truck?

If you want a car, like a family sedan, for instance, you’ll have to go with Chevy since there are no GMC options. If you want a pickup truck, though, that’s when you’ll need to do a more careful comparison since both brands make them.

You can regard a pickup truck as a light semi-truck model. They have open sections in the back to carry loads. You might put groceries in there, or lumber, or just about anything else.

GMC trucks have upgraded transmissions and suspensions as compared to their Chevy equivalents. That’s why you may want to go with a GMC option if you’re going to be using your vehicle mostly for work.

By contrast, if you’re going to be using your pickup truck mainly for city driving, commuting to and from activities, and so forth, you’ll probably want to go with a Chevy model. These should be available at a slightly lower price point, and you’ll doubtless appreciate those savings.

It’s hard to notice many differences between GMCs and Chevys. Since GMC doesn’t make cars, if you want one, you’ll obviously go with Chevy. If you’ve got your heart set on a pickup truck, the tougher GMC models will likely be your best bet.
