Transparent Turntable Black Review: Vinyl Sound Meets Sculptural Design

The vinyl revival has produced no shortage of record players designed to look like furniture first and hi-fi equipment second. The Transparent Turntable in Black ($1,400) sits at the sharper end of that trend, built from tempered glass and aluminium rather than the walnut veneer and brushed steel that dominate the category. We’ve spent several weeks living with it, running it through daily use, and the appeal goes well beyond how it photographs.

    Timeless Design

    Transparent Turntable Black Review

Transparent describes the turntable as a reinvention of a classic vinyl player, built for a modern home rather than a vintage one, and that’s exactly how it feels in person. It’s meticulously put together from aluminium and tempered glass, with the belt drive and full mechanism left visible rather than hidden beneath a lid. The effect is closer to a piece of lab equipment than a traditional deck, and it reads as considered rather than gimmicky, the kind of object you’d choose to leave out rather than tuck away.

That openness carries through to the components. The cartridge is a pre-mounted Ortofon OM5E, a respected Danish name in the category, paired with an elliptical diamond stylus. There’s no cartridge alignment to worry about out of the box, which matters more than it sounds. A lot of turntables in this price bracket ask you to set up the cartridge yourself, and getting that wrong is the easiest way to undercut the sound quality you’ve paid for. Here, that risk is removed entirely.

The unboxing experience matters more than brands often credit, and Transparent has clearly thought about it. The packaging is minimal but protective, and the included accessories, right down to the cotton handling gloves for the platter and cartridge, feel like a genuine upgrade over what similarly priced turntables typically include. It’s a small detail, but it signals the kind of attention that carries through the rest of the product.

    Setup4

    Transparent Turntable Black Review

Setup is where a lot of premium turntables lose people, and it’s the area where the Transparent Turntable most exceeded our expectations. The instructions are clear and illustrated well enough that anyone comfortable assembling flat-pack furniture should have no trouble. With the belt drive and pre-mounted cartridge doing the heavy lifting, the whole process took us under fifteen minutes, including levelling. For a product that looks this intricate, that’s a genuine point in its favour.

    Modular By Design

    Transparent Turntable Black Review

Where a lot of design-led turntables treat the internals as fixed once they leave the factory, Transparent has built this one to be opened up. It follows the same modular philosophy as the rest of the brand’s range, engineered for flexibility, upgradability and repairability rather than replacement. The cartridge mount is a standard half-inch fitting and the headshell uses the SME standard, both widely supported formats rather than a proprietary design that locks you into Transparent’s own accessories down the line. If you want to upgrade the cartridge in a few years, or the stylus wears down before then, you’re working with parts any hi-fi specialist will recognise. It’s a genuinely forward-thinking approach in a category that too often treats the turntable as a sealed unit.

    Transparent Sound

    Transparent Turntable Black Review

The turntable will play through any sound system via a standard cable connection, but it’s built with Transparent’s own speakers in mind, and that’s where it performs best. Wireless playback runs over Bluetooth 5.0, and there’s a built-in preamp with its own on/off switch, so the deck works whether or not your amplifier has a dedicated phono input.

We tested both connections. Wired into an existing amplifier, the elliptical diamond stylus and built-in preamp delivered a clean, well-balanced sound with more warmth than we expected from a turntable this design-forward. Over Bluetooth, paired with the Transparent Speaker ($1,200), pairing was near instant and the sound held up well, with low enough latency that there was no noticeable lag between the needle and the audio. This is where the modular thinking behind the brand shows its real value: the turntable and speaker are clearly designed to be bought and used together, and the combination sounds noticeably better than either product does paired with generic alternatives.

Technically, the turntable runs at 33? and 45 RPM with speed variance kept within half a percent, and the tracking force sits in a standard 1.5 to 2.0g range, in line with other belt-driven decks at this price. None of the numbers are chart-topping for the dedicated audiophile category, and vinyl purists chasing the last word in fidelity may find better value in a less design-focused deck at a similar price. But for a buyer prioritising both sound and how the thing looks sitting in a room, the balance struck here is a fair one.

    A Couple of Practical Notes

    Transparent Turntable Black Review

Living with an exposed glass and aluminium turntable does come with a couple of small trade-offs worth flagging. Dust is the obvious one. With the mechanism left open to the room, it settles on the platter and tonearm faster than it would on a closed deck, so we’d recommend using the cover whenever the turntable isn’t in use rather than leaving it on permanent display.

The glass panel opens via a small ridge along its edge, and it’s not immediately obvious on first glance. Once you know it’s there, it’s easy enough to use, but anyone handling the panel without spotting it will end up pressing on the glass itself, which picks up fingerprints quickly. A quick wipe with a microfibre cloth sorts it out, but it’s worth knowing the ridge is there before you dive in.

    The Verdict

The Transparent Turntable Black isn’t trying to compete with specialist hi-fi brands on pure audio performance, and it doesn’t need to. What it offers instead is a genuinely well-built, thoughtfully engineered object that happens to play records properly, backed by considered packaging, a straightforward setup, a modular design built to last, and a sound profile that holds its own, particularly when paired with the matching speaker. At $1,400 it’s a considered purchase rather than an impulse one, and it comes with a couple of small everyday quirks worth knowing about. But for anyone building a modern, design-led listening setup, it remains one of the more interesting options currently available.
