January 6th Committee Spox and Cassidy Hutchinson’s Lawyer Stand by Her Testimony on Trump and Secret Service Driver

A spokesman for the House January 6th Committee defended Cassidy Hutchinson’s testimony Tuesday after reported denials by all involved with her accusation that President Trump swore and angrily tried to grab the steering wheel and attempted to throttle his Secret Service driver when he was allegedly told he would not be driven to the Capitol on January 6, 2021 after his speech to supporters at the Ellipse near the Washington Monument. Hutchinson’s lawyer also posted a statement defending his client.

Tony described him as being irate. The president said something to the effect of I’m the f’ing president, take me up to the Capitol now, to which Bobby responded, sir, we have to go back to the West Wing. The president reached up towards the front of the vehicle to grab at the steering wheel. Mr. Engel grabbed his arm, said, sir, you need to take your hand off the steering wheel.

We’re going back to the West Wing. We’re not going to the Capitol. Mr. Trump then used his free hand to lunge towards Bobby Engel. And Mr. — when Mr. Ornato had recounted this story to me, he had motioned towards his clavicles.

CNN reporter Gabby Orr, “A committee spox tells @CNN: “The Committee trusts the credibility of a witness who was willing to testify under oath & in public but is also willing to hear any information that others may have that would aid in their investigation.”

Orr previously reported, “Tony Ornato is denying that he told Cassidy Hutchinson Trump grabbed the steering wheel in presidential vehicle on 1/6 or lunged at a fellow agent, a USSS official tells @joshscampbell. CNN confirms that Ornato & Enger (sic) are prepared to testify that neither incident occurred.”

Anthony Ornato is a Secret Service assistant director who was temporarily detailed to the White House in 2019 to serve as Assistant to the President and Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations by appointment of President Trump. Robert Engel was the head of Trump’s Secret Service detail.

News of the denial of the attack was first broken by NBC’s Peter Alexander, “A source close to the Secret Service tells me both Bobby Engel, the lead agent, and the presidential limousine/SUV driver are prepared to testify under oath that neither man was assaulted and that Mr. Trump never lunged for the steering wheel.”

Earlier the Secret Service issued a statement to reporters the agency had been cooperating with the committee, “A Secret Service spokesman says the agency has been cooperating with the Jan 6 committee, “and will continue to do so, including by responding on the record to the Committee regarding the new allegations surfaced in today’s testimony.””

Hutchinson’s attorney Jody Hunt gave a rather lawyerly defense of his client, “Ms. Hutchinson testified, under oath, and recounted what she was told. Those with knowledge of the episode also should testify under oath.”

President Trump issued a denial on Truth Social earlier Tuesday, “Her Fake story that I tried to grab the steering wheel of the White House Limousine in order to steer it to the Capitol Building is “sick” and fraudulent, very much like the Unselect Committee itself – Wouldn’t even have been possible to do such a ridiculous thing. Her story of me throwing food is also false…and why would SHE have to clean it up, I hardly knew who she was?”

Transcript of Hutchinson making the accusations under questioing by Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) (via NPR):

LIZ CHENEY: As we’ve all just heard, in the days leading up to January 6th, on the day of the speech, both before and during and after the rally speech, President Trump was pushing his staff to arrange for him to come up here to the Capitol during the electoral vote count. Let’s turn now to what happened in the president’s vehicle when the Secret Service told him he would not be going to the Capitol after his speech. First, here is the president’s motorcade leaving the Ellipse after his speech on January 6th. Ms. Hutchinson, when you returned to the White House in the motorcade after the president’s speech, where did you go?

CASSIDY HUTCHINSON: When I returned to the White House, I walked upstairs towards the chief of staff’s office, and I noticed Mr. Ornato lingering outside of the office. Once we had made eye contact, he quickly waved me to go into his office, which was just across the hall from mine. When I went in, he shut the door, and I noticed Bobby Engel, who was the head of Mr. Trump’s security detail, sitting in a chair, just looking somewhat discombobulated and a little lost.

I looked at Tony and he had said, did you f’ing hear what happened in the beast? I said, no, Tony, I — I just got back. What happened? Tony proceeded to tell me that when the president got in the beast, he was under the impression from Mr. Meadows that the off the record movement to the Capitol was still possible and likely to happen, but that Bobby had more information.

So, once the president had gotten into the vehicle with Bobby, he thought that they were going up to the Capitol. And when Bobby had relayed to him we’re not, we don’t have the assets to do it, it’s not secure, we’re going back to the West Wing, the president had a very strong, a very angry response to that.

LIZ CHENEY: And was Mr. Engel in the room as Mr. Ornato told you this story?

    CASSIDY HUTCHINSON: He was.

LIZ CHENEY: Did Mr. Engel correct or disagree with any part of this story from Mr. Ornato?

CASSIDY HUTCHINSON: Mr. Engel did not correct or disagree with any part of the story.

LIZ CHENEY: Did Mr. Engel or Mr. Ornato ever after that tell you that what Mr. Ornato had just said was untrue?

CASSIDY HUTCHINSON: Neither Mr. Ornato nor Mr. Engel told me ever that it was untrue.
