On Monday, Donald Trump made a special announcement about abortion.

In the address, he said that abortion laws should be decided by the states, with no mention of a national ban favored by many conservatives.

Something some conservatives were not happy about.

Trump Faces Pushback from Conservatives After Abortion Statement

In the announcement video, Trump expressed support for IVF, and for states to decide abortion policies in the aftermath of Roe v. Wade being overturned.

Reuters reports, “He did not back any national ban to prohibit abortions beyond any number of weeks into a pregnancy, defying hopes among some religious and conservative backers that he would pursue national limits should he return to the White House.”

    The story continued:

Trump previously signaled support for a ban beyond 15 weeks of pregnancy but said political considerations were paramount in the first presidential election since a Supreme Court ruling in 2022 ending a nearly 50-year federal right to the procedure.

“Always go by your heart. But we must win. We have to win,” Trump said in the video.

While his statement aimed to carve out a political middle ground, it drew criticism from both Democrats on the left who favor abortion rights and anti-abortion groups on the right, underscoring the divisiveness around the issue.

“This 50-year battle over Roe v. Wade took it out of the federal hands and brought it into the hearts, minds and vote of the people in each state. It was really something. Now it’s up to the states to do the right thing,” Trump said.

Many conservatives thought Trump did the wrong thing.

    So weak.

Trump punts on the issue of pro-life and pledges to support whatever states decide, including blue states that will allow abortion until the moment of birth.

Head of pro-life group Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, said she was “deeply disappointed” in Trump’s position. “Unborn children and their mothers deserve national protections and national advocacy from the brutality of the abortion industry,” Dannenfelser said in a statement.

There is no such thing as “abortion rights.” Rights are God given and God does not give anyone the right, under any circumstance, to kill children. https://t.co/rVuJ7GWP0v

Conservative pundit Matt Walsh responded on X, “There is no such thing as ‘abortion rights.’ Rights are God given and God does not give anyone the right, under any circumstance, to kill children.”

    1. Democrats can’t even bring themselves to support *any* limits on abortion. They certainly aren’t interested in a compromise

    2. Trump can scream from the rooftops how he won’t ban abortion, and Dems will still lie about him.

Just a pointless own goal https://t.co/dp6OuMcK2z

Some took issue with Trump using the phrase “abortion rights.”

    Pure Politics?

Trump said he has the same position as former President Ronald Reagan. Practically, that means he also personally supports exceptions for the life of the mother, rape, and incest.

No doubt Trump was trying to neutralize opposition based on this controversial issue, eight months outside the election. In fact, he was directly accused of this by some.

How will Donald Trump’s abortion statement continue to be met by the Right and will it affect his standing with his core base? Time will tell.
