Rachel Maddow couldn’t hide her smile on Monday night (June 8) as she played clips of President Donald Trump being booed by New York Knicks fans at Game 3 of the NBA Finals.
“Do you want to see the warm, warm welcome the president of the United States got tonight when he decided to pretend to be a basketball fan because he wanted to go to the NBA Finals in New York tonight?” the MS NOW host said on Monday’s edition of The Rachel Maddow Show.
Maddow laughed before adding, “Do you want to see how much New Yorkers appreciated Donald Trump making them all come to the game hours early, forcing everyone to go through tons of extra screening, forcing New York City to cancel the public, free viewing parties they had planned outside Madison Square Garden?”
The longtime reporter noted how Trump has “only ever talked trash about the NBA” and “doesn’t appear to have been an actual fan at all, at least for decades.”
“Do you want to see the big, warm New York welcome that actual Knicks fans gave him when he arrived at the venue tonight?” she continued before throwing to a clip of the president’s motorcade arriving at Madison Square Garden. Spectators could be seen flipping the middle finger and booing loudly as Trump waved from the car window.
“When they’re waving at you with just one finger, it doesn’t mean the same as another kind of wave,” Maddow quipped.
She went on to say that Trump “likes to claim that New York loves him,” before pointing out that he received only 17 percent of the vote in Manhattan in the 2024 presidential election. Maddow then laughed as she replayed the video of Trump being booed upon his arrival at MSG.
“This was him being booed inside the venue when people spotted him during the national anthem,” Maddow continued, throwing to a clip of Trump being loudly booed when shown on the Jumbotron.
“Just kinda smile through it,” Maddow joked, mocking how Trump put on a smile as the boos rained down. “‘Maybe they have a nickname for me that has an ‘oo’ sound in the middle of it. Maybe that’s what that is.’”
